I quit this place after the rude Chinese lady that would take phone and in person orders crossed the line for the 6th time. After 15 years of supporting the Chikurin brand across their Brooklyn and queens locations, I stopped ordering.
Last week, 1.5 years later I decided to try them again. Called in and was happy to not have the rude lady pick up the phone (maybe she left!). I placed a large order, nearly $100 and the food was below mediocre. Three reasons for why Chikurin sushi is no longer as it used to be:
The rice - they switched to a cheaper rice and do not cook it well. I make sushi myself so it was evident when the rice was not made properly and made my sushi taste not so great. Cheaper rice + maybe a not very experienced rice making cook = below average sushi
Tuna - they switched to a lower cost tuna on the nigiri pieces and it’s just not good
Overuse of spicy salmon mix - rolls that previously had fresh fish are now more and more stuffed with spicy salmon or spicy tuna mix. This is the cheapest fish ingredient. At the same time they increased prices, so you are paying more for a cheaper quality product. The fresh fish in rolls is significantly reduced in size and anything that mentioned spicy salmon or tuna is going to be 80% + stuffed with it - rest assured.
Having eaten so much of their sushi and rolls over the years, I was immediately saddened to taste the difference in some of my favorite rolls. Even the dynamite roll is now double the price, but tuna used is cheaper, the use of spicy wasabi Mayo is almost non-existent, at least the salmon is still the same! The sushi pizza now has no fresh fish, and all spicy mix - I was advised of this -land tried. Sadly it is just no longer delicious.... kani salad is now half the size it was too.
So sushi quality went down and prices went up = not a great combination.
The value $ for quality is lower here than in other sushi places where prices are higher. So here you get less than what you paid for, even though you are probably paying a little less than in some other places that charge more for...
Read moreWalked in to chikurin to order classic rolls to go, on 86 street in Brooklyn, but they happen to be thief’s who charged my card later after I left for more than what I already paid for at the time of my visit. Ordered take out classic rolls, they charged that plus taxes came out to a price that I paid. Suddenly when payment posted to my credit card few days later I see chikurin charged my card 10 dollars more, it’s not my fault that place was empty with no customers at the time it doesn’t mean that they going to drain me and my card, who knows maybe they do that to other clients too. Disgusting place won’t come back to this scamming pace. Will report them to BBB reported them to credit card as well. Their sushi are not that tasty anyway tasted as if I was chewing a piece of unflavored gum. Since when do you leave a 10 dollar tip for take out food that you came to order and pick up yourself? I don’t care if they don’t have as much customers as they used to, maybe that’s why they don’t have because food is not tasty anymore as it was years ago plus their scamming tactic that they use and charge clients what they want later after client leaves. I don’t care if their business need to survive, not...
Read moreI come here all the time like every week, and today is my last day ever ordering anything from this place. I placed an order on seamless and an hour and 30min later received my order. All was good, tipped the deliver and opened my meal. Cold food, slimy fish, ikura (salmon roe) shrunken. Now mind you I order at least once a week, I can tell good quality, so I ate 3 of the sushi and nope nope nope, I knew it was not healthy to eat it. I reported it on seamless (cause your girl ain’t rich to be spending on mistakes and letting things like this slide) and lord and behold 2 hours later the restaurant calls me. (Did I mention I come here a lot?) I know the people that work there and I know the person who called me, you see the reviews that say this “lady that picked up and was rude” on the google review section. yes that was her. She was so unprofessional and it made never want to be a customer at their place again. Now that’s not it, upon writing this review I am currently suffering from a good old stomach bug from the food I ingested earlier today. I will never comprehend the lady that called me to complain why I did not like the food but what I will say is eat at...
