A Shockingly Disappointing Anniversary Dinner My husband, who is Italian-American and loves Italian cuisine, and I chose this Italian restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had a reservation for 6:00 PM but arrived early, around 5:30 PM. The restaurant was nearly empty — of more than 30 tables, only a few were occupied.
For over 20 years, we have frequented luxury Manhattan restaurants, always receiving VIP treatment and consistently leaving generous tips.
At the entrance, an African-American female receptionist greeted us. I complimented her, saying, “You look really beautiful,” and politely requested a nice table since it was our anniversary. Despite this, she seated us at a dark, isolated corner table by the wall. Many bright, spacious tables were empty, and it was both frustrating and disappointing to be placed there.
I didn’t want to sit there, so I cautiously asked another waiter, “Could we move to a window table?” He kindly assisted, and we moved, which improved the evening slightly. However, the receptionist’s initial attitude remained shocking.
During our two-hour meal, the corner table she first gave us remained completely empty, while about 70% of the other tables were occupied — making it obvious that her claim of it being the “best table” was false.
After finishing our meal, I politely told her, “Today is our anniversary, and I specifically requested a nice table. I am extremely disappointed that you seated us in that corner.”
She did not apologize even once. Instead, she looked me straight in the eye and arrogantly said, “I have worked at reception for three years, and I decide which tables are the best. That corner table is the best table.” But that was untrue — the table remained empty the entire time.
I was upset by her rude words and told her frankly, “You shouldn’t be working here.”
Shockingly, she responded by saying, “You’re low class.” She repeated it to my face twice. Her behavior was utterly rude and unacceptable. The receptionist at this restaurant did not act professionally. Her inappropriate comments and behavior, as well as judging customers based on personal bias, influenced the table assignment.”
I have been to many high-end Manhattan restaurants over the years, and I have never encountered such arrogant, unprofessional, and disrespectful behavior from a receptionist. Even when mistakes occur, a simple “I’m sorry” shows basic respect to guests — but she had none: no empathy, no courtesy, and no hospitality. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wasn’t treated with the same respect as the other guests. This evening, which was supposed to be special and joyful, was completely ruined by her behavior.
I sincerely hope this review reaches the restaurant management, and that proper staff training — or disciplinary action — is taken. An employee who treats guests in such a rude and dismissive manner, especially on a special occasion like an anniversary, should not continue working here. Potential guests deserve to know about this experience so they can...
Read moreThe attentiveness of staff from the moment you walk in, to the moment you leave, was superb! The restaurant is split in 2 areas separated by a long, almost 70s feeling hallway. The hall itself had me confused. I felt like I was walking through a fancy library or maybe a scene from the movie "Catch Me If You Can." My boyfriend thought it felt homey (obviously, we have a difference of options 😁). Regardless, the whole atmosphere is sophisticated and inviting. The low music and lighting with hues of gold really made the ambiance. Brownie point for my purse and leftovers having their own stools! Major plus, so you're not trying to hang your purse, put it on another chair, or plopping it on the table. Same for leftovers! We had 2 (what seemed like 10) waiters. One for food and one for drinks. Quickly and efficiently, they explained the menu and made recommendations when I was stuck between 2 choices which is my usual problem. We decided on the 3-course option with a carpaccio add-on. Ok... so the food... unfortunately, we found lacking. We had: Carpaccio.. eh at best. My burrata salad was lacking the ooey-gooey stuff that makes it not just a ball of soft cheese, and there was no acidity to the dish or crunch factor. My boyfriends tartar was beautiful to behold but oddly tasted like a warm cheeseburger. Next was my lobster risotto, which was quite nice but needed salt. FYI, I NEVER need salt as I constantly think most things are too salty. His duck pasta was his favorite dish, but I don't like duck, so I didn't taste it. Next was main dish. I got the 8oz filet mignon medium rare but it was much more medium than rare. No real complaints but nothing amazing either. He opted for the pork special but wasn't impressed. Dessert was more of a disappointment for him (he had the waiter pick). And we topped it off with ok espresso. For drinks! Definitely try Ophelia! That was amazing.
