Fifth Deli & Grocery — Restaurant in New York

EDIT: though I still believe this is the best chicken over rice in NYC, there’s a guy in there that charges me $9-10 based on the day when everyone else charges me $8. I’m totally sympathetic to inflation and get if they need to up the price, but I don’t like the inconsistency. Makes me feel icky.

This is the best chicken over rice in NYC, hands down. $8 for the most flavorful chicken, a huge portion, and occasionally the guy behind the counter will give you a banana with your meal. Don’t mention this to him, or he won’t give it to you.

It’s unclear what the secret is to obtaining the free banana, but you feel like the chosen one when he picks you, and inevitably the rest of your day is better.

I’ve only gotten it twice, but he sometimes recognizes me and I always pay cash.

Perhaps I look sickly to him and he’s worried. I’ve often come in to break up a frustrating work day.

Maybe he likes that I bring friends. I always bring people here when I want to show them classic chicken over rice.

This is definitely the worst deli out of all the deli’s nearby. It’s overpriced. The food looks terrible. I’m scared to buy from there. The only thing good about it is they sell puff bars. he charged me a whole single Rittz row I’m pretty sure he charged me $2 dollars....
