Gold Room BK — Restaurant in New York

I put this place on my list of spots I needed to try because it looked lit (food, drinks & vibes) when I saw a friend at it on IG awhile back, and when I looked it up, I saw that the owner was an alumni of either my HS or college (I forget which), so I wanted to support for that reason in addition to it being black owned. But I’ve been here twice now and have been severely underwhelmed both times.

My first experience was a very disappointing brunch—too many items missing from an already small menu and the food was okay. Despite the fact that the establishment was almost empty that day and that it’s a small place to begin with, the service was slow (maybe because we were sitting outside and they kept forgetting about us? But it was only a little better once we came inside). We both usually love brunch, but it kinda killed our vibe and she said she was never going back.

I wanted to give them another chance though because I always want my people to be great and I understand bad days happen, but my 2nd experience was even worse. I went for dinner this time and even more items were missing from the menu than before, the service was even more painfully slow than before, it took 20mins and two check ins to get our drinks, and my pasta came out an hour after we ordered it but still 15mins before my friend’s even though he ordered the exact same thing. I thought the pasta was okay but he liked it. The only other positives were that the drinks were strong, and even though the staff was ditzy and kind of incompetent, they were very friendly and nice.

I wanted to give 2 stars but I gave 3 because I sincerely hope they improve since the spot has a lot of potential even though it’s tiny, and I still want our people to win... but I doubt I have it in me to try...

A friend of mine recommended coming to this spot so I decided to take one of my friends here to celebrate her birthday. I called in to make reservations with a nice man for 1:30pm. When I arrived I parked on the street not too far from the spot. When we walked in I gave the server Mercedes my name for the reservation. As we waited for the manager to check she took our temperature. When the manager arrived, I forgot her name, she checked my name and said she didn't see it. I told her I called in and she told me they only take reservations online. I explained to her the online option only had outdoor so I called for indoor and the man took the reservation. The manager then tried to say they are booked and that she was sorry as in she cannot sit us. I began to get livid and told her I came from NJ for this spot and my friend, I name dropped, recommended it. The server Mercedes said don't worry and she would talk to the manager and to wait for a minute outside. They then let us in to sit after a couple minutes. The spot is fairly small fyi and they had music playing and a DJ come after.

Mercedes came over and she was very nice. She took our orders and we ordered the pitcher of mimosas which was good. Had to send the glasses back because they were dirty. For an entrée I ordered the steak and eggs and my friend ordered the chicken and waffles. I didn't particularly care for the steak. It was kind of bland and so were the potatoes. Angel our server was AMAZING!!! She tried her best to ensure we had a wonderful experience. Unfortunately that did not happen. 1. The music was absolutely TOO RIDICULOUSLY LOUD!!! We advised numerous staff members of this and every time it was addressed, within minutes the music was blaring again. Having to yell back and forth with your sever as well as the guests at your table will definitely ruin a dining experience. It is an intimate setting, there was/is no need for the music to be playing at those levels. 2. There were numerous issues with my order. The vegetables were ice cold and when returned to be corrected, it took over 20min to receive my food!! By the time it came back, my companion was completely done with her meal. I asked for my order to be canceled because needless to say I was digusted!! The chef came out and advised that it was on it's way out and it would be discounted. I wanted to support the business so I compromised and accepted the new order. The jerk salmon burger was good, but they should consider changing the bun. It was a bit dry. The broccoli was fresh and piping hot this time. The mac/cheese wasn't bad, but it definitely could be improved upon. 3. The Shark Bite margarita is the only aspect(besides Angel) that deserves 5 stars. 4. The outdoor seating was very cute and quaint and I did see them scrubbing down everything after each seating area was used.
