It is now November, 2022 and I want to say that the restaurant compensated me for this problem (below) and I have had excellent experiences at Hiramasa recently. I appreciate their attention to the problem.
This is a new review Aug 3, 2022. Tonight I experienced fraud (no other way to describe it). At the sushi bar, I paid $16/glass for champagne. When I moved outside, the same champagne, served by the same servers was $40/glass. I was not informed of a change by these servers. Only when I got home and looked at my receipt did I see it. I immediately called the restaurant and the female who answered had no explanation. I said why did someone not tell me the price change? This is dishonestly. I immediately called my credit card companies and will not pay. The owner had previously given me his card including phone number which I tried but the number did not ring? What is going on at Hiramasa?
This was my third visit to Hiramasa. Previously, I had enjoyed the food. My husband (Japanese American) and I eat sashimi and sushi regularly. Tonight the Brussels sprouts were great. The sashimi tuna tasted old and I sent it back. The cod was great. I asked for a spicy tuna hand roll (which I had on previous visits) and the chef refused: It was very early and the restaurant was empty so I am not sure why the hand roll was a burden. My plan was to bring my son and girlfriend here for omacase next Saturday. But now I reconsider. I live in the neighborhood and am disappointed. NYC is full of stunning Japanese restaurants so I think I...
Read moreWe arrived at 8:20 for an 8:30 reservation. We were told the sushi bar for our $400 omakase meal was full and to walk down the block to a bar and come back at 8:40. We returned, and they still didn't have our spots ready. The waiter asked to seat us in the "chalet" which I assumed was a separate part of the restaurant. It was... it was outside on Valentine's day in February. It was cold. My date said it was OK and tried to assuage my embarrassment. The food was excellent, but the plates seemed to come with random long pauses. The waiters kept leaving the door to the chalet open. I had to keep rising to close it. My date and I were dining in our coats. To their credit, the waiters recognized their failure and provided me with Yuzu sake. My pregnant date couldn't drink it. They had no caffeine or alcohol-free beverages for her. At least the food was good, and the waiters were cognizant of the problem. This was not an omakase experience. This was not seeing the sushi prepared at the bar and having the piece explained to you. I can't believe I paid 400 dollars only to embarrass...

My friends and I were looking forward to trying this new restaurant. Form the inside and outside it looks very upscale and we were expecting a good meal. On Friday night, they ran out of rice and with our food they gave us cold and terrible Indian rice from the restaurant next door. With the chicken teriyaki platter it was supposed to come with miso soup, sushi rice, and a salad. AFTER AN HOUR AND A HALF of waiting we were served overcooked chicken drowned with sauce, no miso soup, a sad excuse for a salad. We also had ordered a sushi roll that was never given to us. We tried to leave before the food arrived as we were sitting there for an hour with nothing on the table. The restaurant refused to comp the meal after no-one ate their food. Unacceptable for a restaurant on the upper east side to provide such a poor experience on a FRIDAY NIGHT! My friends and I will be sure to tell others in this neighborhood to ignore this restaurant. A WASTE OF MONEY AND...
