A shadow of its former self.

I've lived across the street for 20 years and went to the original 52 Irving before they moved. In the last 2-3 years the place has unfortunately just gotten worse and worse. Once my favorite neighborhood go-to spot, I will now go a few blocks out of my way to get something better. Some of my pet peeves:

Forget any S/M/L size option on anything but the house drip coffee Forget the fresh strawberries & blueberries that used to make the granola, fruit & yoghurt so delightful. You might get apple compote now. The choice of pastries etc. has reduced greatly, and the shelves are pretty bare come mid afternoon. The latest? Oh, we don't do iced coffee any more. You can have a $6 cold brew thing if you want.

The only conclusion I can draw is that some accountant or consultant is running the business now and just trying to squeeze every dollar they can out of the poor faithful customers. Maybe there are new owners? Look at the year-on-year ratings on Yelp - the drop off is pretty obvious. It's a shame,...

One of my favorite neighborhood coffee shops in NYC!

This outpost of Irving Farm is down the block from Gramercy Park and boasts a lovely selection of pastries and a few heartier meals as well. The espresso is made perfectly, my go to is a cappuccino, and their cold brew on tap is great too.

Pre-COVID this was a great spot to bring a book and settle into a chair indoors. During COVID, you can still grab a little table outside. If you want to keep it movin’ grab your drink of choice and head a couple blocks north for a walk around Gramercy Park - literally around it (vs. inside) since it’s one of New York’s only private parks and requires a key to get in.
