Java is an Indonesian family-run restaurant and serving the south Park Slope neighborhood for 30 years. The place is arguably small and it was decorated with some Indonesian artwork, they also have a few tables outdoors but we decided to stay indoors due to really hot weather.
For us to try as many of their dishes, we agreed to go all out and ordered the Rijsttafel or tapas that was consisted of 15 dishes shared by 2 people: 2 Soto Madura soup; chicken broth soup with thin rice noodles Gado Gado salad; mixed boiled veggies Chicken sate Sayur tumis; sautéed assorted veggies Sambal Goreng udang; jumbo crispy shrimps Kambing Goreng; lamb dish Acar salad Bakwan; corn fritters Beef sate Ikan belado; crispy fish fillet Kare Ayam; curry chicken dish Beef rendang It was served with a big bowl of white rice.
They first served the chicken soup that we truly enjoyed and it was followed by a couple of salads and the corn fritter. They then placed a metal tray on our table with a flame underneath and they then started to put small plates of dishes one by one on the tray (8 dishes in total) not only that we love the presentation, but every single dishes are all delicious and came with different flavors.
We then concluded the dinner with a delicious complimentary coconut pandan pudding.
There are a few dishes that stood out like the kambing Goreng (lamb) ikan belado (fish) and Gado Gado salad.
Since it’s hard to find a good Indonesian restaurant in New York City, I was glad to find this place and will come back whenever I crave some...
Read moreCame here tonight for my birthday dinner. My daughter and I got the rjistafel, aka 12 course tasting menu, 2 for $65. My partner got an order of Nasi Goreng with tofu and 2 of us each got the delicious virgin cocktail: Jakarta Green Light, which is pineapple juice, orange juice, coconut creme and pandan syrup. In total, the bill was $100. They charge a 4% fee if you use a credit card to pay so I'd suggest bringing cash to avoid the extra charge. The nasi goreng was really good and so were the drinks. We started off our rjistafel with a hot bowl of chicken noodle soup, which my daughter and I both loved. Then, the waitress brought out the pickled vegetables, a salad with a peanut dressing and the bakwan, aka corn fritters. The corn fritters were a perfect pair with the pickled vegetables. A nice balance of salty, savory, acidity and sweet. I loved the shrimp dish, fish dish and the stewed vegetables that were part of the main course tasting. My daughter liked the chicken satay and the chicken curry the best. Dessert was a coconut pandan pudding, which I gobbled up. You also get a hot cup of tea to finish off your meal. All in all, a great dining experience. We got there at 545pm and didn't finish until 730pm. By that time, the place was packed. The whole place is literally run only by the owner and her daughter. They do everything so please be patient, especially during peak dining hours. I highly recommend this place and I'm looking forward to going back for another...
Read moreWe came here after a day of only two bags of Cheetos, bread and an egg fully expecting good, Indonesian cooking. We were greeted with a cold interior, barely warmer than outside. The food took a long time to come, they were low on staff so it’s understandable, (we arrived around 7). The soup we ordered came barely hot, though it was delicious, we could’ve definitely enjoyed it more if we weren’t slightly shivering or if the soup was hot. Then came our food, my mother ordered the “rendang” beef, it had a pleasant aftertaste though the beef was way too overcooked and had become stiff. My sister ordered the, I’m really bad with names but here is my recollection of it, crispy fried chicken with a hot and sour sauce. This was surprisingly good. I, unfortunately, ordered the “kalio ayam” which took a little bit more time to cook, when it arrived , the chicken was rubbery and I had to really force it in. After paying more attention to it, I saw that part of it was raw. This wasn’t the best of situations. So my final verdict, the food’s concept is really good, they have an idea of what to make but they don’t know how to make it. I suggest you call before and ask how long you would have to wait for your food to make sure you don’t end up in...
