Review of Jean Claude at 1076 1st Ave., New York, NY 10022
Walking into Jean Claude on 1st Avenue felt like stepping into a charming Parisian bistro, complete with warm, ambient lighting and a welcoming vibe. I started my meal with a glass of Sancerre that was crisp and refreshing, perfectly setting the stage for what was to come.
I indulged in the Les Escargots Au Beurre—tender, garlicky snails bathed in rich, herb-infused butter. The presentation was classic, and each bite was a reminder of why this dish remains a timeless staple. Moving on to the Steak Au Poivre, the pepper-crusted steak was cooked to perfection, with a luscious, creamy peppercorn sauce that complemented the juicy cut of meat. The flavors were bold yet refined, offering a balance of spice and richness.
To end my meal, I had the Crème Brûlée À La Vanille, a delightful dessert with a perfectly caramelized sugar top that cracked beautifully under my spoon, revealing the smooth, vanilla-infused custard underneath. I paired this with a cappuccino, which was expertly crafted and rich, providing a comforting close to a delightful meal.
The love of my life, who accompanied me, enjoyed a refreshing mimosa followed by Eggs Benedict. The poached eggs were flawlessly runny, the hollandaise silky, and the presentation was elegant. The champagne was bubbly and crisp, enhancing the brunch experience. We both finished with cappuccinos, which were smooth and well-balanced.

Read moreI was feeling a bit blue tonight so decided to take myself out to the new French restaurant down the road. If I expected this place to cheer me up I was sadly disappointed.
The bread that was served at the table was just barely warm. Unfortunately not warm enough to soften the block of butter ice with which it was served.
To start I chose the escargot in butter. I can’t actually say there was any butter involved as they were served in a parsley slurry the color of toxic waste. Really unappetizing to look at. Sadly the ones I received didn’t taste of anything I’ve come to expect from escargot - no rich butter, no aromatic garlic, even the snail meat was bland. Of the 6 shells that arrived at my table, only 5 had denizens within. I guess the 6th escaped on the way from the kitchen.
Between courses it took over 25 minutes for the main to arrive and over 20 minutes for the waiter to inquire if I wanted a second drink. When the main - moules frites - did arrive, the sauce was bland as dish water and the mussels were gritty. Mussels should not be crunchy! The only thing saving this place from 2-stars on food is the French fries, which while not hot, were delightfully crispy.
With several established French restaurants in the neighborhood, Restaurant Jean Claude needs to significantly...

The food is exceptional. The steak frites was tender and perfectly balanced, the escargots rich and flavorful, The scallops with risotto were perfectly seared — buttery and tender — served over a creamy, rich vegetable risotto that was full of depth and balance. The fries were the best fries I’ve ever had! Perfectly salty and crispy. And the crème brûlée absolutely spot on. Every dish feels thoughtfully prepared and deeply authentic.
