Proper American diner serving fresh food. Friendly and comfy surroundings. A great start to any day.
Been a few times since the new opening time of 8am PCE (post covid era) and I'm delighted to report John's is thriving. As it fully deserves to be. Had scrambled eggs bacon coffee and English muffin today. Was all tip top. Service is fast efficient New York style, no nonsense, but with an added smile. I love this place.
September 2023. I've noticed a subtle change recently from proper home fried sliced potato to frozen shredded potato and today it was not fully cooked through. Needs to be crispy edges and browned nicely. Mine was cold in the middle, and totally white potato. Don't let your standards slip. Please!
October 2023. Update. Seems you listened. Today I had a fantastic breakfast. Potato fries were hot, cooked through, and superbly crispy browned. That's what I'm talking about😂
I decided to go in at 0830 this morning to give the griddle an extra half hour of heating up. Maybe that helped, but I'm keen to think it was just better cooking! Let's hope so. Atmosphere today was electric and brilliant. This place rocks. (Sunday morning)
October 2024 and John's is buzzing. Busy and thriving. The quality of food is excellent. I love this place.
November 2024, Aaaaaarrgghh no you let me down again John's!! It's all about the potato rosti. It clearly comes out a very cold store, and you cook it on the hot plate. But every now and then you get it completely wrong and there's cold uncooked bits in the centre. That's simply unacceptable. In anyone's mind.
I even made sure to say "extra well done potato" please.
The griddle needs three things to make things tasty and 'right'. Heat, oil, and time.
You are using too little of the LAST TWO.
TAKE A NOTE PLEASE.
UNACCEPTABLE
The thing is you are without doubt one of the best breakfast diners in Manhattan. But you need to fix this.
Update April 2025: I'm a bit of a regular here and I do really like John's cafe diner. They have really listened to customer feedback and the potatoes are hot, cooked, and brown colour (color😂). I have taken to asking for my English Muffin to be well toasted and that's really good too.
The two regular guys I see working at the griddle are sensational and work so hard. And at my table, I was served by Ruth this time, friendly, engaging, with a glorious smile. John's is looking up! It's gonna be a busy summer so maybe you ought to start opening up earlier like you used...
Read moreThe food is good and the service is efficient. The management, however, could use a lesson in humanity. Last Sunday, June 27, I was seated at the counter closest to the grill with a dear friend who happens to be a Franciscan friar who is in his 80s. As we were wrapping up breakfast, an order was returned. It was a wrap and an ingredient had been missed in the assembly. A manager (or perhaps the owner) proceeded to loudly berate the cook who like all the other staff was working at a frenetic pace throughout our breakfast. The reprimand was loud and demeaning, at one point the supervisor said "you can read can't you?" and then proceeded to slowly and deliberately read off every item in the wrap. The worker who appeared to be slightly over middle-aged and Latinix remained silent, focused on the order he was preparing, but it was clear that the public rebuke stung. We debated whether to say something to the manager, but feared he would retaliate against the worker. At the time the decision seemed prudent to protect the worker from further harm, but as the days have passed, I increasingly think that I missed an opportunity. I should have found a way to compliment the food and comment on how impressive it was that so many orders came out right given ingredient variations and space limitations. It will not...
