Crushing It with City Walk in NYC's West Village

Hands down, one of the best spots to eat in the city. I’ve been coming to JL for nearly 6 years now. It’s open late and always busy. The staff is friendly and the food is excellent. They have a good wine selection and the solid cocktails. Bar tenders are knowledgeable and are willing to experiment. The location is right in the heart of the west village. The restaurant might only seat 2 dozen people and I think that only adds to the overall experience. It’s a tight fit so if you’re afraid of small space a or like to spread out this isn’t the spot for you. Dinner is a favorite here. The menu is always evolving but some staples like the Brussels, Duck Breast, and Mussels are items that you must try. I recently went in for a late lunch and per usual the place was packed. Don’t get discouraged, it’s packed because the food, staff, and ambiance is great (and worth the wait). Greg (the GM) asked me to wait and quickly found me a seat at the bar and I was good to go.

Charming spot on a corner - went here early on a sunny weekday morning. Just a nice classy vibe overall - worth checking out the photos from others. For food, I wasn't starving and went for the breakfast sandwich - egg, cheese, jalapenos on a English muffin. No meat by default but I figured I'd give it a shot - maybe the spice would carry it to delicious victory. It looked like it was put together with love but unfortunately was pretty bland? Maybe not enough peppers or I should have added another protein. Next time I'll give the avocado toast a shot instead. Wife got the mushroom croquet and that looked pretty great. Lots of cheese with a bed of mushrooms below. I regret not stealing a bite. As for service, waitress was nice, but after attempting awkward eye contact for a while I did have to get up to get some ketchup since she was distracted. Not a big deal, place was quiet so I get it. Looking forward to giving it another shot.

Ooof where do I start with this one. I had an 8:30 PM reservation here. We arrived at 8:30 and were told that the previous guests hadn’t left yet, so we waited until almost 9:00 PM. For a busy, high-traffic restaurant, the management team should place a 90-minute time limit on tables. It’s not fair for guests to sit and chat after paying their bill (especially with so many patrons waiting outside).

I ordered a gin-based drink called the Violet Riot. I drink a lot of gin and have never tasted anything like this. Just objectively bad. Looked like purple cleaning product and tasted about the same.

Already having a poor experience, we ordered only three appetizers and decided to fill up with pizza afterwards. We ordered (1) chopped liver appetizer, (2) graffiti eggplant and (3) cauliflower. The graffiti eggplant was offensively distasteful. The combo of yogurt sauce and salsa verde sounded interesting on paper. When we both took a bite, we looked at each other and just laughed. Like “oh wow this is actually bad.” Don’t think I’ve ever had that experience at a restaurant before. Next, the (warm?) chopped liver was okay flavor-wise, but presentation-wise… yikes. I was embarrassed that I even ordered this dish. It looked like spreadable brown mess on a brown piece of baguette. Just a whole plate of brown and beige. Cannot think of a dish less visually appealing.

However, the cauliflower was good.

I had high expectations and was wildly let down. I very rarely write bad restaurant reviews, but this was overall a laughably...

I cannot tell you how horrified I was at this experience and how it totally ruined what was before, a lovely evening. I was sitting at the bar on the upper side near the kitchen. The two female bartenders were lovely. I had 2 glasses of red wine @ $17.00 each, a salad and the trout dish - not a cheap check. While I was nursing my second glass of wine, this guy / your host comes over to tell me to close out and leave because he has people waiting! Mind you, I was there for maybe a little over an hour and generating nearly a $100.00 check while others around me were not eating. I was appalled and told him so and then he said well I could move to the lower level. I said, why should I move I was quite comfortable where I was. He did not offer any solace. Now why did he pick on me to move? First, it’s outrageous, second, because I was a woman alone. But this is rubbish. Not kind, not mannerly. Nothing about this is right. There were plenty of other people to ask to move, or have the three people just wait a little longer, or how about, kindly explain the situation to me and ask me move, rather than tell me to close out and leave.

Thanks for ruining my $100.00 evening (I still tipped the bartenders 20%).

And BTW, the trout needed lemon and salt, and serve some butter or olive oil...

Been coming here for several years and was excited to bring my brother for his first time. We sat outside and greeted with a menu, which we where told it was a snack menu by the server and that they where switching over to dinner. Even though it was a limited menu, we decided to try it out. After five minutes looking over the menu and making our choices, another server came over and apologized and said that we are able to order from the full menu. We where grateful and we than placed our order. Ten minutes later, another server came over and apologized and said that we cant order from the full menu and gave us back the snack menu. Very frustrating and upsetting for my brother's first experience. Again, we placed an order and again five minutes later, another server approached the table to tell me that my dish is not available. Im a vegetarian and my only choice was hummus and had it as my entree and he insisted that I get a complimentary salad. The salad was complementary, as it was a half portion of a side salad. It was so salty that I had to push it away. What a big disappointment and seems that no manager had interest in visiting the table. We paid and went to another restaurant and had...
