The service? Slow AF. But the food? It sends me to a rocking chair, far far away on a beach, with - ah I can't even do this anymore after finishing my grilled salmon - food coma, inexplicable joy, blissfulness of a baby, and a nap.
I was up in Harlem the other day at a similar, more gentrified, better decorated and more popular seafood joint with superior service and active social media presence and thought of Jus Fishy (emotional cheating). The food at Jus Fishy is, in my humble option, much better and costs only 2/3 than the other place (Lolo's Seafood Shack). This pretty much sums up the nature of Jus Fishy: No branding, modest customer service, minimum ambiance, jus straight up good fishy.
The wait is long...expect to sit around for at least 30 min. I don't blame people who get mad because the whole place smells so good, which makes the wait worse. Strategy? Come with a book or some sort of entertainment. Don't come in too hungry (it's counterintuitive because you will alway think of Jus Fishy when you are). Order a Daddy's Punch in size Large and sip on it. Think about Dad for a while. Call him. Read Yelp reviews of this place to confirm that waiting this long is common. (Yes, it's common.) Stumble upon this Yelp review. Write your own Yelp review on Jus Fishy, in Jus Fishy...Realize the owner wouldn't read it. (Otherwise the service would have improved and they would have figured out the order via App thing, lol). Decide to impersonate the laid back, island attitude. Find yourself rather happy.
As in anywhere else, cheerfulness, patience, consistently tipping well will help you. So if you want to get ahead of the waiting game, there's that. (It's a small business and they do remember your face).
My favorite items on the menu is the Grilled Salmon with Okra and Cabbages. They come with homemade hot sauce and some variation of a mayo. The Daddy's Punch, mentioned earlier is a delightful peanut and banana flavored shake that they make right in front of you. You should order that. All ingredients are very fresh and the fish is light on butter (read: healthy) and not too heavily seasoned. If you are looking for something more like Cajun food, walk a block down to Midwood Flats. Something more flavorful but still Caribbean? Go to The Food Sermon Kitchen. Jus really good fishy? Stay in line for Jus Fishy,...
Read moreMy Son thought he'd treat me to an early Mother's Day lunch when he came to visit this past Friday. He also treated himself. I started eating a few bites and asked him what kind of pasta it was. He said, rasta pasta. I've had rasta pasta before and made it once on my own. This didn't taste like it at all. It was lacking seasoning and kinda tasted like plain, oily pasta. Salmon, shrimp and rice was also on the menu. As I ate the salmon, it wasn't bad but I kept getting a stench, like something was bad. I began to sniff around my food, but my allergies wasn't giving me the full sense of smell. It seem like there was a smell but disappeared. Maybe it all in my mind. I took another bite. This time trying the shrimp. It tasted foul. It reminded me of a sewage smell. Ugh I didn't want to make my Son feel bad. So I told him to cover it and put it away. I'll get it later. He did. I was tired, didn't really sleep the night before. I took a short nap. Not even 30 minutes. By that time, my Son ate some of his food and shared with my daughter. I asked him how the food was. He said it was okay. Later that eve, after he left to go home, I asked my daughter if the food was alright. She didn't care for it. She found it to be funky and tossed it. I too tossed a full, well almost full container of food. My stomach was gassy the whole night, and by Saturday crampy and bathroom for the whole day. It wasn't how I wanted to spend my weekend. The only good thing that I can say, the amount of food was hefty. They are generous. Food can't sit out forever. At some point if it's not selling or sits out too long, it needs to be tossed or your jeopardizing the health of your customers. Please check and monitor your food. Don't sell spoiled food just...
Read moreUpdate: Went again yesterday and got fried prawn and fish. So delicious! I love the fried prawns, they were big and the seasoning was perfect. The amazing lady wasn’t there this time- hopes she’s there on the next visit.
This is the best restaurant in Flatbush. We shared the fried shark and snapper which comes with chips, both were delicious, I’d recommend the shark as it was super tender and a bit lighter. The chips were cooked perfectly and seasoned well (not too salty). Next off we shared the grilled snapper with 2 sides. Fish was great and super fresh. The first side was pasta and it was good. The best part was the 2nd side we had it, I don’t remember the name but it was like a green spinach soup/ curry IT WAS AMAZING. Overall an incredible experienced paired with awesome service, the lady (most likely the owner) behind the counter was attentive, warm and made us feel special! Yes the service is slow, but everything moves slower when people are happy and take pride in their food- be relaxed have a beer and enjoy the...
