I've been here once for the plantain soup and they were sold out. The owner said that they usually sell out by three pm but if I want to get some after three pm to call and ask them to save me some.
Well, I ordered their grilled chicken instead and it was very chewy and not as good as other places on Northern Blvd. The ambiance was loud playing EDM and a bright interior. Not bad for those who want to feel young again. The bakery section was nicely displaying bakery type foods and they have a full menu to order from as well as many kinds of coffee and fruit drinks (also meh - better can be found on Roosevelt Ave).
I called back today 04/05/2024 and the lady who answered asked me to hold a minute in Spanish. She put the phone on the counter and forgot about me. The phone is no ordinary phone either. If they still have it on the counter then the automatic message prompt will come up after you hang up and try calling back. 1 star for this nonsense. She handled five customers at the counter with the manager helping out but no one could take my call. I hung up after 5min on hold and tried calling back only to hear that they don't have their voicemail set up so you can't even leave a message. And now after 20min their mailbox is still not currently accepting messages and they still have the phone on, on hold, on the counter, unanswered.
That is extremely rude and unacceptable. The soup isn't worth it at this point.
They're nice to your face but when you're physically not there it's the...
Read moreI had a terrible experience here yesterday.
I came for lunch on a Friday afternoon. When the server gave us the menu, I noticed that the right page had the prices whiten out. They were unreadable. I asked the server how much are the lunch items, and she said that "prices go up and down but it depends." The person I was with ordered fish soup, which by itself is $9.50. I made the mistake of assuming that it was in a similar price range.
To my surprise, when they brought us the bill, it was $25 for a Bandeja Kafra! I immediately rushed to the server and asked her why she didn't tell me the price. She tried to defend herself and make excuses. I then had to speak to the owner and explain to him what happened. He agreed the server made a mistake and offered to make me a 25% discount.
Although the price is nicely decorated, don't go here for lunch. Stick to the Colombian pastries and bakery. Don't let...
Read moreI would give Kafra a 5 Star BUT
I have been going to Kafra since their opening. I love the attention and the food very much. Bakery and other food alike.
BUT today I came for lunch. I ordered the same soup I ordered 3 weeks ago (sancocho, which comes with rice, plantain and cole slaw). The quality was just as good but the quantity was 1/2 of what it was 3 weeks ago and more expensive.
It makes me sad because people see gentrification happening and want to take advantage of it, but my message to the owners is that you are still in Jackson Heights and you cannot charge Manhattan prices. Most of your community is till working class and like me will stop buying from Kafra and instead support small businesses that cater to me and not the gentrifiers.
Good luck Kafra. I hope you will consider lowering...
