For my friend's birthday celebration, we decided to Kotobuki for dinner when we couldn't get a reservation for her favorite sushi spot. This worked out in the end because I really enjoyed my experience here.
After you're seated, someone will come by with a hot towel to clean your hands. Then comes the water, hot green tea, and a small little dish of spicy sweet potato noodles (think Korean japchae).
To start, we ordered the Spicy Tuna Sandwiches (layers of chopped tuna, crab salad, avocado & spicy mayo sandwiched betweeen rice & soy nori "bread"). I couldn't really taste much tuna in there but I still liked it. It was a nice start to the meal.
For my entree, I went with the Sushi and Sashimi combo (4 nigiri, 8 sashimi, salmon carpaccio, California & UFO roll). For $27, this was so worth it because it came with a lot of food. I was struggling to finish by the end. It isn't super high quality sushi. It leans more on the spectrum towards takeout sushi. But if you have a sushi craving, this will work.
The only downside was that it took a long time for food to come out. But this could be due to the fact that we were a large group. I definitely want to come back (probably with a smaller party) and try out the Spicy Tuna Pizza and their...
ย ย ย Read moreCame across this place on a whim in an early Saturday evening, I definitely was not disappointed!
Price - reasonable. Bottle of sake was about 30, apps were about 7-9, and the sushi was definitely filling for the price!
Service - we were seated quickly, and our waiter gave us the perfect amount of attention throughout our entire meal. He was super kind and professional!
Food/Drinks - honestly. The shrimp dumplings were so good, I would order several plates as my entree. I totally recommend this as a starter. Our sushi was also really good. It was so clear that the sushi was fresh and made with a lot of care. We only ordered a bottle of sake, but their drink menu is diverse!
Atmosphere - the restaurant is kind of dimly lit, unless you seat by the window. When we first arrived it was pretty calm, then it seemed to be that a rush was on its way. By the time we left it was getting pretty noisy, which is expected with a lot of people. The tables are fairly close together. My partner and I had to scoot the table over just for us to move in and out, in addition we could clearly overhear the couple next to us conversation.
TLDR - yes, this establish is great and yes you should go for sushi and totally a great...
ย ย ย Read moreDuring our first day of NYC exploring we came upon this very inviting, intimate, modern restaurant. From the street passing by we could tell that everyone inside seemed so relaxed and were enjoying their conversation, food and drink. So our group of 3 decided that we would be dining there for dinner. We had no reservation and were seated quickly. We were quickly met with our server whom we later discovered would meet our every need before we ever asked. Food service and presentation were phenomenal (and yes we were those people taking pics of the food; they were masterpieces) Food quality and freshness was THE BEST! Their drink list choice was very appealing and had something for everyone. I highly recommend The Bonzai which is a blend of plum rose and sake on the rocks. Dessert of choice for our group was fried cheesecake and banana tempura with green tea and red bean rice. Overall I give this place 5 stars!!! I will make sure we eat here during...
