I have never left a bad review in my life, but the way this bakery treated my friend was appalling, callous, and frankly racist. She wanted to grab a snack before we went to the movies, so we stopped by la bicyclette on our way. My friend (a black woman) went to buy her sandwich while I (a white woman) waited at the table scrolling through my phone. They ignored her for almost 15 minutes until she saw that the ipad was turned outward and appears to be a self service kind of thing. She put her order into the ipad and paid and then waited for her food. After waiting another 15 minutes or so she asked about her order, and the owner (I believe his name was Tone) was immediately Hostle towards her and seemed to be accusing her of trying to steal? She showed him her bank statement showing that she had just paid for the food, and one of the other workers even vouched that he had seen her place the order and pay. Nonetheless this guy continued to accuse and berate her in the most disrespectful and condescending tone. I had been pretty distracted on my phone for the first part, but when I heard the way he was taking to her I went to see what was going on and was honestly shocked at how he was talking to her (a paying customer just trying to get some food!) I tried my best to Karen on her behalf, but my poor exhausted friend ended up just paying the guy AGAIN to avoid further conflict. When we left she said that his tone changed to be more apologetic when I stepped in, which just made my blood boil. It especially broke my heart how normal it seemed to my friend. Shame on you, La bicyclette. You seemed like a cute bakery, but apparently all of your artisanal breads are poisoned with racism, and I will never patronize any of your...
Read moreI saw a nice review for this place that emphasized on the croissants and I’m always seeking the best croissants from quality bakeries so I decided to give this place a try. It’s located on Dekalb off of S.Elliot pl. There is no sign or mention of la bicyclette anywhere on the bakery but that’s okay it’s findable. I ordered the classic butter croissant and a coffee. The croissant was well layered and had good top and bottom crunch to it with a soft interior. I would say it was certainly baked properly but it was lacking the rich buttery flavor I prefer in artisan croissants. The coffee was good but it was a tad too light of a roast for my personal taste. Friendly staff inside and a nice outside dining area was enjoyable. I was underwhelmed by the croissant but they had a whole array of baked goods to try, perhaps on...
Read moreI've frequented La Bicyclette for weeks, often accompanied by my big dog, to grab a croissant during our morning walks. No one ever minded. However, today while waiting in line, a barista singled me out, asking if my dog was a service animal. When I honestly replied no, he abruptly demanded that I leave my dog outside. Despite my explanation that I couldn't leave my dog unattended as I was alone and I'm there only to quickly grab a pastry to go, the barista remained insistent and made a face. This treatment felt especially ridiculous given that other dogs were inside, and their owners weren't asked to leave or were not pointed at. To say the least, it was the most unwelcoming experience that has left me questioning whether...
