Late review, but as they say better late than never. About 2 weeks ago, my mom ordered a Tres Leches cake w/strawberries for my 50th birthday party and we were disappointed. First time we ordered a cake from them, since we had read and heard good things about La Guli, but it was a complete waste of money. The cake was too moist that as soon as you cut it in slices the cake just fell apart and looked like a total mess. It didn't have a tres leches flavor, had too much cream between each layer and peaches when we had asked for strawberries. We went to complain in person about this and the owner wasn't friendly or helpful at all. She automatically said that nothing can be done or discount could be given. It was my 50th birthday and my guests never got to finish their piece of cake, so instead had to throw it away since it wasn't good. It's unfortunate that there are places like this still in business with owners that aren't willing to help their customers. Please be careful buying or ordering a cake from them, cause you will just be throwing your money away. Times are tough these days and money shouldn't be thrown...

There is definitely an old-world charm to La Guli Bakery, located on Ditmars Blvd. in Astoria. This old Italian family-owned business, whose granddaughter now runs the establishment, has been in the same building for decades. If you are looking for a traditional Italian pastry experience, this has been my go-to since my childhood. They used to be the best bakery, hands down. From homemade cakes to gelatos, you name it—they were fantastic. I make it a point to visit here every once in a while, and today was the day before they shut down for a week of vacation. Upon entering, my partner and I still had the same feeling and smell of the bakery and had the whole store to ourselves, which made it easier for us to choose the strawberry shortcake, chocolate eclair, fruit tart, and glazed Napoleon. Placed an order and asked if the specific design I wanted could be done. I was assured that it could. When I picked up my order, I was in disbelief that I was charged so much money for something That looked so horrible. I’m not the one to complain- in fact, I never complain, but I was horrified by the lack of professionalism, service, and product done for me. Honestly, I could’ve done a better job.

When confronted the ‘manager’ he stated that I didn’t know what I was talking about. He preceded to raise his voice at me when I asked for it to be fixed, I of course yelled back. All of the sudden he came around the counter and proceeded to CHOKE ME!!! I wish I was making this up, because I was in such disbelief. I hope they read this review as they know exactly who he choked. I ended up having to contact the cops.
