It’s was our last night in NY, and we realised that - shock! horror! - we haven’t managed to fit a single slice of pizza into our busy eating schedule. So we strolled down the 1st Ave, looking for the place we vaguely remembered walking pass earlier on in the day. And there it was, La Mia Pizza. This is not a candle-lit trattoria where the owner himself (it’s always a man, how come?) comes over to ask how you doin, or a fancy restaurant where your waiter looks ten times more glamorous than you could ever hope to pull off - La Casa Mia is a pie by slice type of a place where you get to point and they het to hand it over to you on a paper plate, to take home or eat at the no frills no nothin tables next to the counter. We ordered a slice each, pepperoni & mashroom respectively. They arrived thin-crusted, just as we like them (but there are also deep pan, more dough for your dollar, versions), with the bottom crisp and charred, and the rest of the base beautifully chewy and soft. The fillings were perfectly judged, with just enough pepperoni (or whatever) per square inch of base to satisfy instead of overwhelm, except perhaps for the ricotta kind, which was a bit of a proper cheese overload. But that’s just a matter of personal taste; besides, generosity’s meant to be one of the Heavenly Virtues, right? The staff - a bunch of super busy, handsome young men (yes, I’ll be taking that fee slice the next time I fly in) - are courteous, friendly and down to the point. Which is pizza, in its many...
Read moreWe tried La Mia Pizza because it’s close by home and I ran out of food to cook. Okay, another pizzeria in The Village, what a surprise... But really, these pizza chefs are on to something. The crust feels handmade. It has an uneven look, and it’s crispy-chewy (yes it’s possible) with just enough oven burn on the bottom. The toppings! The mushroom slice was completely covered in thick slices of mushroom lined up like good little soldiers. Garlicky, just salty enough, spicy, juicy fresh mushrooms, and no oil dripping down the sleeves. The first bite resulted in my mouth involuntarily making a loud Mmmmmm! which frightened the dog out of his post walkies coma. Next was the very veggie slice, with a standard selection of black olives, onion, tomatoes, and broccoli. Again, the slice was carpeted with the delicately diced, and very fresh, veggie selections. Still curious, and hungry, we split the third slice, a mozzarella-ricotta, tomato assemblage. The cheese was thinly applied evenly across the slice and the tomato sauce looked like it was painted on in broad splotches. It sounds chintzy, but the mix was elegant. Gotta repeat: no oil dripping down your hand. Spiced perfectly, this slice basically was folded, aimed, and fired full speed right into my mouth. Oh, don’t worry, I didn’t abuse the dog- he got 3...
Read moreWill never order from this place again. Had an absolutely horrible experience with this place tonight. What’s most frustrating about this experience is that we have been loyal customers for the last 2+ years. So we ordered delivery tonight and we received the wrong order. We understand it happens so we called to have the order corrected. We were told that they would send the corrected order and to just keep the order we received. We thought ok great and appreciated the effort to correct. But the story doesn’t end there. When they brought the corrected order they asked for the wrong order back (Wasn’t much food. Just 1 slice of pizza and a meet pattie) and we informed the delivery guy that we were told to keep the incorrect food. So about 10 minutes later the restaurant calls back and asked where the returned food was. We explain that he told us to keep it and he gets irate and calls us liars and tells us never to do this again and hangs up. I didn’t appreciate this for a number of reasons. One I have been a loyal customer. Two this whole thing was an inconvenience to us. Three we have never ever lied or tried to scam food out of any restaurant so we are insulted by the accusation. Fourth the guy went from 0 to 100 and just got so angry. Good riddance. Deserve less...
