I had the wonderful opportunity to dine at Lao Yu Yuan Dumpling House, and it proved to be an enchanting culinary adventure. This establishment takes pride in its diverse selection of dumplings and Chinese delicacies, and I had the pleasure of sampling some of their renowned specialties.
To start, I ordered the Fried Chinese chive box, and while it wasn't my personal favorite. The chive filling was tasty, and the crispy exterior added a satisfying crunch. It might not have been my top pick, but it was still a delicious and well-prepared appetizer. (Cost $5)
Next up were the mixed soup dumplings, and they were definitely a highlight of the meal. The delicate dumpling wrappers held a flavorful and savory broth along with a burst of tender meat or vegetables. (Cost $13)
The Pan fried beef dumplings were another standout item. The slightly crispy bottom contrasted beautifully with the juicy and flavorful beef filling. (Cost $9)
I was truly impressed by the Shanghai pan fried udon at Lao Yu Yuan Dumpling House. The portion size was generous, and the combination of perfectly cooked udon noodles, flavorful sauce, and complementary ingredients created a satisfying and delightful dish. (Cost $11)
The staff at Lao Yu Yuan Dumpling House were friendly and accommodating, providing attentive service throughout my visit. The cozy ambiance, with its touch of Chinese aesthetics, added to the authentic dining experience. While the Fried Chinese chive box wasn't my favorite, the mixed soup dumplings, Pan fried beef dumplings, and Shanghai pan fried udon were outstanding. The portion size was generous, and the menu offered great value for the price. If you're looking for delicious dumplings and authentic Chinese cuisine at an affordable price, Lao Yu Yuan Dumpling House is...
Read moreConsistently solid Shanghainese restaurant in Flushing -- definitely one of my favourites in the area, and it's never too busy or pricey (probably cos it's a bit further away from the "main" central area of downtown Flushing).
If you order above a certain amount (I think $30), you can get a free order of the soup dumplings 鮮肉小籠包 (or get free validated parking?). They are really delicious and definitely one of the highlights of this restaurant! They are just practically overflowing with so much soup, with really thin skins and such fragrant, juicy pork fillings.
Some other must-tries:
Chilli oil wontons 紅油抄手 were fantastic. Portion size was a little larger than I expected, and the chilli oil smelled so good!
Scallion pancake with beef 蔥油餅夾牛肉 is one of my favourites. The wrapper was very crispy and the beef was tender and very savoury. The balance of the slightly-sharp scallion flavour was perfect.
Fried chinese chives box 韭菜盒子, another classic. Lovely crispy outside layer with a delicious fresh chives/noodles/etc. filling.
Soymilks - I've had both the hot and cold sweet soymilks, and they are both delicious. You can't go wrong here.
The location is a bit hidden (in the back of a small mall), which I suspect is why it's not busier. I've never had to wait, even during weekend lunch hours. Service is always very efficient and to-the-point, which...
Read moreAbout three weeks ago, we visited Lao Yu Yuan Dumpling House and had a fantastic dining experience. Every dish we ordered was delicious: the pork chop on rice (5 out of 5), sticky rice dumplings (5 out of 5), fried dumplings (5 out of 5), and spicy sour beef noodle soup (5 out of 5). The restaurant, tucked away inside the Arcadia Mall, felt like a hidden gem.
Eager for another great meal, we returned for breakfast. Initially, things looked promising—the tea was served hot this time, unlike the room-temperature tea on our first visit. However, the food quickly disappointed us. The salty sticky rice consisted mostly of rice, with scant amounts of pork floss, pickled cabbage, and fried culler (1 out of 5). The sesame puff was doughy, lacked sesame flavor, and wasn't flaky (1 out of 5). The Scallion Pancake with Beef was the biggest letdown; the pancake was deep-fried, dry, and crunchy instead of the usual soft texture. It seemed like it had been refried from the previous night, and the beef slices were sparse (1 out of 5). The greasy, oily taste of the scallion pancake still lingers.
If you plan to visit Lao Yu Yuan Dumpling House, skip the breakfast items and stick with their...
