They have a very big menu, so you can have favorites while still amusing yourself with different meals. The table is set with a winner thick salsa with fresh diced garlic for their chips. I like to save some to spike my black beans and rice and corn tortillas that accompany so many of their dinner selections. The guacamole size on the menu is for family style sharing, but off menu is a single portion for a third of that cost. Their guacamole is substantial, not skimping on avocado. Chunky and creamy without being watered down as much as other places. You could ask if you want a slice of lemon or lime to squeeze on it for usual profile. Or not. Satisfying as is. There are less expensive choices, like tamales - kind of an la carte appetizer. My thing: I have tried two versions of the pork chops. I recommend the pan version with the cactus (get your veggies in!) more than the grilled version because both come with onions, but that was juicier in my sampling. (At home, I get the butcher's thicker cut. They give you two thinner ones. I think that makes its temperature and timing more of a risk of error. So love chops on the bone that I tried again with satisfaction. Gnawed the bone, like the dog I am!) Oh, but their pork ribs are meaty fat juicy and also come with cactus noodles - I want to get that again! Such nice staff! Welcoming and comfortable for leisurely meal. They have big screen televisions. Sometimes a few are not getting signal. Often a couple have soccer and other maybe a kids' cartoon or international reality TV or soap. Piped in Mexican music tracks ongoing. Some crooners. Saturday night may find a live singer, but amidst distracted diners. I know they have beer and mixed drinks, but that is not my interest. Noted that people nurse big pretty margaritas, etc. Comfortable as a woman alone there. Not a dive bar. Families as well as people on dates. The big room is well lit. I like to see my food. Although much music, not too loud. They have a smaller room near kitchen adjacent. Clean unisex 1 seater restroom. You will need to wash up before and after from finger food, so matters for more of their good points. Some dishes are like home cooking. I have gone there many times since spring 2023. Keep exploring menu happily. Did only have 2 dishes I regretted. One was pedestrian and forgettable, so sorry I cannot tell you which to skip. The other was tasty and smelled great, but was just so rich that I had over done it as a single diner with gluttony. Me, not them! So, more to come. When it gets chilly, looking forward...
Read moreWent to the Mexico Diner in Kensington, Brooklyn, NY for Valentine's Day yesterday. People didn't start piling in till 7:15 PM yesterday. The restaurant decorated for the holiday and had food and drink specials. Happy hour has $10 large cocktails. They've got indoor (with two dining rooms; one with the kitchen and another quieter) and outdoor dining.
They bring you homemade salsa and chips. The salsa is quite good and a little sweet.
Ordered two drinks which were very tasty and well made. Not strong unfortunately. Mine, the enchanted, had a lot of blended pineapple and coconut cream, which I loved.
For our entrees: bistec a la tampiquena and pechuga de pollo a la mexicana. Both dishes had slim slices of meat and lots of onions. The beef dish had a sauce and enchilada. Both dishes come with rice and beans on the side with tortillas.
Service was excellent. We didn't have one way waitress. They were a large team. We enjoyed the food, but the kitchen made an error and put cheese in one of the dishes (I'm allergic to dairy and I told them upfront no crema o queso). Both of us ordered dishes to share so that was disappointing. They offered to make it again, but I didn't want to waste any food so I declined. Been here 4x and they only made a mistake once.
Main dining room has a few tvs and play Mexican music videos. They've got soundproofing so it's less loud than you'd think.
Portions were huge. We could only manage half so we will enjoy again today. We...
Read moreJust delightful! Labor Day several places were closed so I ventured to the other side of Coney Island Ave.
I had a frozen mango margarita and mole poblano. The mole poblano came with more then enough tortillas and rice and beans. Usually, I will add some hot sauce but not needed here. The mole was perfectly spiced with oodles of flavor.
The rice and beans were perfection which I added to the mole - heavenly. The salsa and chips were also fantastic. The chips had a nice salty taste and the salsa has a kick but not too spicy.
After my fabulous meal I had coffee which was also nicely spiced. This place knows how to use spice that delights the taste buds. The coconut flan was awesome.
Usually flan is very fluffy without a lot of body. This flan was light and fluffy and had body at the same time. Not overly sweet with good coconut flavor.
The wait staff were friendly and helpful. Prices were very reasonable. The mole poblano was 18.95. Given we are in inflationary times where else can you have such a delicious dinner for this price.
Can't wait to come back and try...
