Service: 5+ Exceptional Food: 5 Excellent
Mido in WV exceeded expectations on all fronts. Highlights: personalized service; attentive chef and staff; special selections of fish not usually served by other restaurants. $100 for such an omakase experience is a no-brainer, especially in the city.
I've eaten a lot of sushi around the world and have a bit of a spoiled palate. For omakases, the expectation is usually high due to the notion experiencing the best the chef currated along with the higher price point of the meal.
I reserved Mido on a whim for a Monday night meal in a city famous for its variety of exceptional omakase options.
Service: the chef was actively watching our every reaction to each individual piece presented and made adjustments accordingly. For example, my gf didn't like the japanese squid app for its texture and strong flavour and I thought the scallop nigiri's yuzu salt was a bit over-powering (both were personal preferrences). We were not vocal about any of this but the chef recognized our slight hesitations and provided extra pieces as a consolation! Pleasantly surprised! They also had a server present a photo of each whole fish on an iPad with both the English and Japanese names in order for us to visualize what we were tasting.
Food: I was very pleased with the quality of the fish. More so, I was surprised by the variety, especially with a few pieces that I have not tried before. We are all sick of salmon and yellowtail. Chef's usage of flavours was overall expertly executed and paired well with the individual pieces.
Conclusion: don't miss this omakase experience especially at a steal of a...
Read moreThe fish here is very fresh and the rice is mixed well. For $100 the food is not a bad value. If you’re not expecting a serene and traditional Japanese omakase experience, this is a great choice.
I was excited to try this place given the high reviews but unfortunately didn’t have a 5* experience. While the service here is very friendly and sweet, they messed up very simple beverage orders which in isolation would have been ok, but the reason for the 2 star penalty is that they started our seating 40min late which is unheard of for omakase. While we were seated on time, the first dish was not served until 40 min past our reservation so that they could group 3 reservations together. They chose efficiency for themselves instead of serving guests timely. If they want to do this it’s fine but they should time the reservations accordingly. 40 min is a VERY long time to wait to begin eating when omakase usually starts right away.
The meal took over 2hrs which in some circumstances is a nice thing but here it just dragged out too long and by the time we started we were too hungry to enjoy the meal fully. Between the hanger, confused servers, delay in meal, frigid temperature and extremely loud patrons sitting behind I could not get out of...
Read moreThe fish was so fresh, I didn’t want the frills, but even so they provided just enough frills without taking away from the integrity of their fresh fish. The ambiance was great for an omakase space- warmed up with wood tones and a brick wall, circumventing the fluorescent lighting with a candlelight dimmer vibe from the overheads. Their willingness to substitute at will was incredibly appreciated for our fairly high maintenance group, and the complimentary sake dispenser was both beautiful, and made a night fun, when none of us planned to drink. The fish was top notch, particularly the toro, and the arctic char, and shockingly the Spanish mackerel (usually one I skip) were the highlights, and the scallop was the the highligh. Our hosts, alex and Kate were attentive and hospitable, and on top of the experience at all moments, and Kazema our sushi chef was unwavering in his ability to think on the fly and solve for our many allergy complexities. This was a truly top notch omakase experience, and a better value than most, but with absolutely no...
