As someone who is gluten free and also mostly dairy free, I very much appreciate what Modern does. The food is usually delicious and I don't have a problem paying for quality. The problem is they are wildly inconsistent with their execution, the store is disorganized (to put it mildly), and many of the employees are seriously lacking in customer service skills.
I've been doing to-go orders now since the start of the pandemic and frequented the store before. Not once during the pandemic - and I mean not one single time - have they ever gotten the order correct. Today, for example, I ordered 2 bags of bagel chips and was given 1 bag of potato chips and no bagel chips. I didn't catch the mistake until I got home so the store was unwilling to do anything about it, but when you pay $10 for 2 bags of bagel chips and get 1 bag of potato chips, you're right to be upset. You can see in the photo that today's avocado-pom was weak on the avocado. A significant portion of the bagel had no spread, and for most of the bagel, the spread was thin. For $11, I think it's fair to expect more.
When you walk in to get your to-go order, good luck getting anyone to talk to you. Despite only having 1 other person in the store, no employees acknowledged my existence. There is no protocol for pick-up - they stack bags on a table and you get your own. It's a miracle there isn't more theft. When my order was ready (the only one being put on the table), the man working put it on the table, 8" away from me, and didn't even look at me or ask me if the order was mine.
We're all stressed and doing our best in a pandemic - I get it. But Modern strikes out on service and consistency, not once, not twice, but every time. I really want to support Modern and keep spending locally and with small businesses, but my gosh, this place makes it tough.
UPDATED 10/13: The store promptly reached out to address my issues and refunded the appropriate costs. I've changed the review from 3 to 4 stars and will further change it from 4 to 5 if the next few orders prove correct. I appreciate their...
Read moreI want to start off by saying it is never my intention to hurt a small business in anyway but I do want to give an honest review. I lived in NY for 10 years as an adult and I grew up eating bagels everyday- they are my favorite food of all time. A year ago, I found out that I am allergic to gluten which was absolutely devastating given my loves for bagels and any baked good really. Fortunately it’s fairly easy to find good gluten free baked goods these days but it’s NOT easy to find good gluten free bagels. I found modern bread and bagel online the other day and was SO excited to try the bagels that everyone swears taste exactly like a real bagel. I ordered them online and they arrived with no ice pack or anything which I found odd given the time of year…I used to order from Zabars out of state and there was always an ice pack included to keep them fresh. They were however vacuum sealed which I know is supposed to do the same thing I guess? When I opened them the garlic had basically melted everywhere due to the heat. Now maybe they taste better completely fresh and I have considered that. I proceeded to eat one anyways and I’m honestly not thrilled. The texture is off like way off, they are very dense instead of light and fluffy ..they don’t toast well (have tried 3 different settings on my toaster) and they get hard immediately after toasting -like many other gluten free bagels. I was pleased with the size of the bagel and the everything seasoning for the most although honestly it had a bit of a weird flavor. I’m only writing this because everyone is saying they can’t tell a difference. Well this is somewhat close to a regular bagel but in no way does this taste like a real New York gluten filled bagel. I guess bagels are one or the only things that can’t be recreated, it’s just extremely...
Read moreI’m a native New Yorker. I’m an avid bagel lover. I’ve been gluten free for about a decade now due to a chronic health condition. I’ve eaten pretty much every gluten free bagel out there. There have been alright ones, but never ones that feel like a bagel. They always feel like bagel shaped dense bread. I was VERY in expecting with this place. But the only thing you need to read, is that THESE BAGELS ARE THE BEST GLUTEN FREE BAGELS OUT THERE. They’re big, for one. We all know GF food is tiny. These are large. They’re not overly dense and heavy, they feel like a true bagel. I genuinely don’t even need to toast them, which is wild for me because I usually call people who eat untoasted bagels heathens. But these feel like regular fresh bagels.
I can’t speak for their coffee, and when it comes to their pastries : So far I haven’t been totally impressed. To be fair, my sweet tooth is specific. The pastries are good, but like the cream filled donuts just aren’t for me. My partner who loves cream filled pastries was over the moon about the donut, and she isn’t gluten free. So, I’m still giving it 5 stars because unless this place was selling Nutella stuffed peanut butter cookies, I prob wouldn’t like their pastries. I do have a glazed donut in front of me with no filling that I’m eager to try, but I’m way too full to do that rn. Just please go here.
Also : The meat is all vegan, but the cheese eggs and other products are not. They just don’t mix meat and dairy, and let’s be real, if we had to pick one, dairy is def the better option to choose. I’d rather vegan meat (which is immaculate btw, and I eat meat) and dairy cream cheese than real meat and vegan cream cheese.
Pictures if an everything bagel with cream cheese, egg and bacon. It’s a big stuffed mess, just how I like it. And there’s...
