The more "poke bowl" places that pop up in NYC, the more skeptical I become of them. They're usually not REALLY poke bowls, but just a more customizable version of a sushi bowl. While I'm not sure if the bowls at Red Poke fits into the authentic poke bowl category, I still thoroughly enjoyed my meal. In fact, out of the 5 poke places in Manhattan that I've tried so far, I think Red Poke might be my favorite, and here's why:
They have little dry-erase sheets where you can circle all of the toppings that you want. This eliminates all of the long lines filled with people deciding on the spot what they want/asking what certain bins of mysterious ingredients are. You give the cashier the completed sheet, pay, grab a table, and when your food is ready, they'll call your name to pick it up. (TIP - just be careful with the serrano peppers. They're okay at first but as you eat more of it, your tongue will slowly but surely burst into flames.)
They have a lot of non-raw fish options. Think of Red Poke as a poke bowl place combined with a Korean rice bowl place. A lot of other poke places will have cooked albacore tuna or chicken as their non-raw fish options. But not here - aside from raw tuna and raw salmon, you can also choose shrimp, bulgogi beef, spicy pork, grilled chicken, and herb mushroom.
I was teetering between the regular and the large bowl for a bit but finally decided on the large because it was only $3 more, and the large bowl allowed me to pick three proteins, compared to the regular two. I feel like the large was a little bit too much food for me, but the regular would have left me only somewhat satiated, but wanting more. I wish there was an in between. But size doesn't matter! (not even saying this sarcastically) - I'll still be back for some more of their bowls. Maybe next time, I'll try one of their creations,...
Read moreWe all have our tastes. Some of us like hot, others – sour, and many people have a sweet tooth. Many of us, when at a restaurant, tell the waiter “include this, exclude that, more of this”. Well, Red Poke has an answer – they give you the opportunity to channel your inner Jamie Oliver (or Gordon Ramsay) and “build” your own meal. First of all – you have to pick a size (medium or large). Then – a base. You can choose from super greens, japchae noodles, white or bb rice, and quinoa. Then you add raw (fish) or grilled protein (from pork to tofu). Next are the mix-ins – greens and veggies. After that, you pick a sauce – a total of eight options with several gluten-free ones. The toppings give you the opportunity to add more greens, protein or carbs, and the crunch – some seeds and fibers. They also offer handmade dumplings and sides that will complement your meal. With some imagination, culinary skills you will be able to make yourself a delicious and unique dish, and with some knowledge in healthy eating, you will get a meal that perfectly fits your diet and training routine. You have your own options and you can combine them as you wish. However, their signature bowls are not to be underestimated. The Poke dishes (with the salmon dreamin), the grilled ones (with the Gangnam) are super tasty and nutritious, as well as healthy. You have a vegan option with the...
Read moreI like the Red Poke and I think I tried all the menu since I order from here at least once or twice Every week. The staff are nice and kind and got me extra side when I revisited there since they forgot to add my added-on egg one day.
However, As a loyal customer who always adds tons of extra meat and sides, I found out that somehow their food quantity is getting smaller.
If you look at my photo uploaded that was a large-size poke(+2.75) of Gangnam (mixed with chicken and shrimp) with extra grilled spicy jeyuk meat (+4) and extra grilled bulgogi beef (+4). (The dark greenish On top of it is not meat it is avocado) The large poke doesn’t seem to be it’s a larger size. And there were literally like 2 pieces of jeyuk meat, and little bulgogi beef too. I thought that would be too little for the extra 8 dollars I added.
It wasn't like this when I ordered in previous months or so, I know it because I mentioned above, I’ve ordered here at least once or twice a week. I think there should be sort of a consistency in quantity as the quality of their ingredient has been good.
