Y’all…where do I begin. My girlfriend and I have been enjoying Roey’s happy hour since 2023. It’s a New York City staple for us and with its affordable (and delicious) drinks & pizza, and cute interior and outdoor seating. Roey’s is one of our favorite ways to enjoy the summer. Recently however, the service was awful enough that feel compelled to let other people know what they might be stepping into.
So, my gf and I know the drill: happy hour line forms, we get there early and are seated relatively quickly. We’re at the bar in the back, kind of shoved in a corner. The area is cramped but in a cozy way; I didn’t mind. It’s 4pm, the host lets us know the seats are needed at 5:15. No problem. The bartender served us drinks within the first 10min of us being there, but as time passed he was slammed with drink orders and we were left alone.
By 4:40 or so, nobody had came to take our order. We were sat between two parties of three who, during this time, placed orders and were served food AND two rounds of drinks. It’s nearly 5, a server comes over. I feel pressed for time but I ordered a pizza. In addition to the lovely spritz’s, it’s what I came for after all!
Time passes…the two groups on either side of us were served a second order of pizzas and a third round of drinks. Meanwhile, my gf and I haven’t even had a second round of the signature cocktail. After filling multiple drink orders, the bartender finally has a moment to ask us if we want a second round. It’s past 5:15.
By around 5:30 I gave up on the pizza. The server who had taken our order was nowhere to be found, as in, hadn’t stepped foot in the bar area it seemed since taking our order. The other servers were moving so quickly in and out of the room that we weren’t able to get their attention. The bartender still looked pretty occupied filling orders (I’m talking rows upon rows of spritz’s) so we weren’t really sure who to talk to. I suppose I could/should have taken initiative and asked a host or manager about how to get our food, I was just a bit confused about what the heck was happening.
Anyways, the place starts to clear up. The parties next to us (again, who each had 3-4 drinks and two rounds of multiple pizzas) begin to leave. I ask the bartender if I can get the check. He gives us a free round of spritz’s since we didn’t get our pizza, which I did appreciate. Shoutout to the bartender with the silver earring/ear cuff.
The experience was just really baffling. My gf and I were almost completely ignored for an hour and a half by the Roey’s team. I will also say this, we were some of the only visibly queer people dining in the establishment, so seeing the restaurant’s list of pride drinks while being actively ignored was comical.
My gf wants to go back but I’m...
Read moreWhat started as a great afternoon with two friends quickly turned into one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had, all because of rude service and poor communication. We came in for Happy Hour, ordered drinks, and told the server that we wanted to eat later. Within the next 20 minutes she asked us three times if we were ready to order food, each time sounding more annoyed. When we finally decided to go for the full three-course dinner (which is a lot of food), she just took the order without much courtesy. Even during Happy Hour drinks, she was unfriendly – she literally waited for us to finish every last drop of our drinks before giving us the next one, which she was already holding. Strange, but we let it slide. The real issues came with the meal: Our second course arrived while we were still eating the first. Before we were halfway done with the second, she was already asking about dessert. We said we wanted it later, and that’s when she told us, out of nowhere, that we only had the table for 1.5 hours and had to leave soon. This was the first time anyone mentioned such a rule. We asked when exactly we had to leave, and her answer was in 4 minutes!! At that point, the restaurant was nearly empty, yet they didn’t offer to move us to another table or even open a new tab – something that would have been totally fine with us. Instead, we were forced to take our desserts from the three-course meal to go, which was absurd. When I spoke to the manager, she confirmed the supposed 1.5 hour rule for Happy Hour tables (even though Happy Hour had already ended) and admitted the server should have told us earlier. But she didn’t offer any solution either, despite the fact we wanted to order more and stay longer. To make things worse, we overheard her offering the table next to us the option to switch tables so they could stay. In the end: the location is nice and the food is good, but the service was shockingly rude and dismissive. Easily one of the worst restaurant...
Read moreDuring my visit to NYC myself and my partner visited Roey’s twice. One time good and one time not so good. The first day we had a booking for food and drinks and were seated straight away and we had a great time. Because we enjoyed our night in roeys we decided to go back for happy hour to grab some pizza and drinks. Upon arrival we were met by a very rude host. She was very dismissive and rude. I am 25 years of age and my partner is 28, she demanded ID from us but our passports were in the safe in the hotel, I then proceeded to tell her I had dinner and drinks here two days ago and there wasn’t a problem with me being served then and wasn’t asked for ID either. I even told her I would book a new reservation in front of her on my OpenTable account and offered pictures of my passport and drivers licence but was met by a cheeky and rude woman. My partner then said he would go back to the hotel to get our physical passports and once she realised we were irish and not American, her attitude became worse and at this point we didn’t want to dine/drink or spend more money in a rude amd uncomfortable environment made by your host. Roeys should make up their mind if they want ID from every customer on every visit and not to pick and choose. This host needs a lesson in hosting and friendliness. It is a pity that she has ruined our opinion of this establishment. I have seen Roeys reply to other bad reviews about ID’s stating that all customers ordering/consuming alcohol need to show a valid US ID, and on my booking on 2nd July @ 7pm, both myself and my partner were served alcohol with NO ID ASKED FOR OR SHOWN, come on Roeys, do better, train all of your staff the same because this is...
