I have the pleasure of knowing the owners of this cozy little establishment tucked away in Park Slope, what with them hailing from Central New York (much like myself). Whenever I come to Brooklyn I get a little frustrated with the number of upscale shops in the place of modest businesses that made the place feel like a home to so many; it's been feeling a little bit like Manhattan lately. This place is nothing like that. It's an upstate grown establishment with an upstate, homemade arts n crafts sort of vibe. It just happens to be in Brooklyn. The staff is friendly and conversational. The coffee (from Ithaca, a bonus!) is great too, so that's nice. I was a big fan of the Brooklyn blend, a medium roast. Seating is sufficient; the only minor qualm has to do with the narrow spacing, but that limit is a given with the storefront they're doing business in, so it's easily forgiven. Just don't feel too entitled to a seat. High strung, constantly moving New Yorker stereotypes aside, Brooklynites like hanging around their neighborhood coffeeshops. The food is amazing and leans in the vegetarian direction. I had the Roots Burrito and the Breakfast Sammy, both served with lovely homemade salsa. They were sufficiently filling as they were delicious. Next time you're in South Brooklyn and want a real neighborhood community feel while feeding that caffeine addiction we all share, Roots is a good way...
Read moreVery unique cafe offering great coffee and I would say even better breakfast sandwiches! Our group got 2 Sammies with sausage, 2 Toasted multigrain sandwiches with avocado, cheddar, tomato and egg & the Boarderline burrito wrap with avacado, black bean spread, mushrooms & cheddar. All so delicious! We even got a few of the sweet treats to go! Brownies, Chocolate chip cookies, baked oatmeal bar, all great! Great to eat food there or grab on the go for the subway or take to the office, very filling. A great staff of Dan, Johnny & Sarah greeted us like old friends! All super friendly, fast and efficient. Met the owner Patricia who was equally gracious as a host and could tell she cared deeply about her customers and business. Would gladly make this a daily or weekly stop. Oh and don't miss out on the secret outdoor patio in the back! Access it by the hallway on the left of the counter. Very cool, peaceful and relaxing. Can't wait to go back now! Don't miss this hidden gem...
Read moreI came in here one morning and basically never left. Behind a tiny unassuming storefront is a real community, with the same baristas every day who get to know their customers and run arts, indie publishing and music events when they're not at work (and sometimes when they are).
I just wanted to get that part out before I started talking about the food. You may be scared at first by the thought of vegan muffins, but hidden behind the fridge is a tiny kitchen where they make the most incredible breakfast bowls with scrambled egg and cheddar, fresh plum tomato, sliced avocado, black beans, homemade chipotle salsa - if you want you can get toast or tuck it all into a burrito... and I haven't yet gotten to the grits, yogurt and granola, rolled oats, and grilled cheese sandwiches with all the stuffings (yes they have meat)...
Need I even mention the wifi and the fact that I would rather work here than at home any day. And I live half...
