Split pea soup was tasty. Had some oil, peas, pieces of meat in it. It was nice they brought this out first while I waited for the sandwiches. If you're hungry when you get there and they're busy then getting some sort of soup or appetizer to start with could make sense.
Had the Corned Beef & Chopped Liver with Russian Dressing on Rye. It was good and the liver made it a bit more interesting than usual. Might prefer the pastrami though.
Had the S&P Regular, which is pastrami, cherry peppers (hot), and russian dessing on a club roll. It was delicious, but sort of overkill with the Russian dressing. I mean, I usually put sauce on top of things that are bland, or put meat on top of things that are bland, but to put sauce on top of meat is sort of overkill. The pastrami I think would taste delicious without the dressing and save quite a few calories. I think next time it'd be better to get the pastrami with the cherry peppers for a little heat, and get it without the Russian dressing.
Loved the atmosphere and the service. Pretty fun place and very friendly service.
Also I'm lactose intolerant and the things I had were fine for me.
I had the bacon and peanut butter sandwich. It wasn't great because the peanut butter overpowered the bacon flavor, so the whole thing just tasted like peanut butter.
I had the Fifty/50, which contains both tuna salad and egg salad. I didn't like the tuna salad part, but perhaps because I don't like tuna in general very much. The egg salad part was good, and I'd like to get an egg salad sandwich again sometime (they have other egg salad options...

Read moreI've been here before during the week when it's not as busy and the food was really good. I came back today (Saturday around 1:00pm) and it was busier (as expected). I approached someone behind the counter to ask how long the wait would be. Before I had a chance to ask the question, a person who I'm assuming was the host, rudely interrupted me, raised his voice and yelled in a super condescending way that I couldn't take 2 seats that opened up at the counter which I wasn't even trying to take. I tried to respond that I was actually asking a question and not trying to take the seats but he raised his voice above mine, continuing to yell and wouldn't let me ask how long the wait was or explain myself.
His attitude was so off-putting I decided to leave. I understand that food service on a Saturday in New York at a popular tourist spot is hectic and really draining on top of trying to corral people in a small/awkward space. I also think it's worth treating customers/people with respect despite your frustrations, especially when...
