I have often walked by the Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar on Third Avenue but always had the distinct impression that it was overpriced and seemed to attract a certain clientele that didn’t mind spending more because it limited the kinds of customers who might prefer a cheaper cup of coffee. I was shocked that a large latte cost over $8 and probably should have headed to the door but wondered, is it possible that their coffee would be worth the price? While trying to decide, I checked out the prices of their salads and sandwiches, that actually looked reasonably priced but regrettably, I just ordered the latte and after a few sips, tossed it in a garbage can! I’ve been coming to this café consistently for the past month, using my laptop to work while always purchasing drinks and food to support the business. It’s a cozy space and had become part of my daily routine until today.

Out of nowhere, I was told that using a computer is against their policy. There were no signs posted, and nothing was ever mentioned during the many visits I’ve made. It felt especially frustrating and frankly discriminatory, considering other patrons seemed to be treated differently or allowed to stay longer without question.

If this is truly a policy, it should be made clear from the start not selectively enforced. I used to feel welcomed here, but now it feels like certain people are being singled out, and that’s unacceptable.
