I am writing to warn my NYC community about the Manager at 1140 3rd Ave, UES Madison Reed, who damaged my hair when I received her services for highlights and root coverage on March 25, 2025. This service caused my hair to break due to unprofessional application of hair products. Further, immediately after my hair was washed, and I sat in the chair for a blow out, large amounts of my hair fell from my head on to the table in front of me. To retain evidence of the damage, I collected half of the hair that fell from my head and placed it in a napkin. They quickly swept away the other half before I had the chance to pick it up. The manager denied that she damaged my hair, stating if I was not happy, I should complain to “corporate.” I then left the salon. When I got home, my Madison Reed subscription was cancelled (not by me) my membership for that month was refunded, and I was not charged for the service. Within a few hours after the service my scalp begin to itch and was raw. It continued to itch for approximately 4 weeks thereafter. More hair has continued to break off ever since and far more than is usual for me. I’ve been very depressed since this has happened. Yesterday and today I finally had two separate consultations at different very reputable salons in NYC for their advice on how to fix my hair damaged by the manager at Madison Reed. The separate hair stylists individually confirmed that my hair was irreparably damaged, advising that the damage was directly related to the improper hair application of products to my hair. I produced the hair that fell off at Madison Reed, which these stylists examined. Additionally, these stylists also observed that the highlights that I still have on my head are “white”, and not blond, in large chunky amounts, which is not the proper technique. As a result of this damage, I am now unable to have any additional highlights for an extended period of time because this would cause my hair to continue to break. The quality and look of my hair will be ruined for months while I wait for the damage to grow out. The purpose of this review is to warn customers seeking blond highlights from the manager at the 3rd Ave Madison Reed so that they do not experience the same damage and ruin that I...
Read moreThey have a good system at an affordable price and the color matched well. I chose Demi permanent as an experiment because I was concerned about hair damage and had virgin hair. It covered approximately 95% of my grey and the remaining hair looked just highlighted. Also they have promotions. I walked in and requested a particular stylist that I had spoken to previously whom had given me a coupon then I was walked back and was told someone else was doing my hair, not the best customer service there. I must say these employees work super hard though and they are busy and are trying hard to keep on top of everything. It probably would help to have a receptionist because it’s also a mess with products and trash on the counters. Also you can’t book with a requested stylist online you have to call or walk in. My colorist was pleasant and did a good job with some navigation of my requests. I think it’s important for a stylist to appreciate and respect when someone knows their own hair and not just what the stylist believes is best. The young lady who blow dried my hair was fresh out of beauty school and very ambitious and eager and mentioned the technique was something “she brought with her to the salon”. I appreciate her hard work but I had to mention a few times she was pulling my hair so hard it hurt and I unfortunately had a little bald breakage spots on the temple following also I had to get a massage the next day from her giving me what felt like whiplash. She replied I shouldn’t resist her pulling my head. Regardless my blow dry was smooth and looked nice although I had requested volume. Their shampoo bowls also have no padding for the neck so ask for a towel before. Lastly they advertise as being ammonia free but do use other ingredients that can be as damaging to your hair, including Ethanolamine. I’m waiting to see how my hair and color holds up and I’m on the fence here. I will probably try doing my roots at home once and re evaluate. All in all for the price it’s...
Read moreAwful experience! I went end of December 2023. I arrived early and my appointment started on time. The colorist was 5 minutes into applying my color and another female colorist came over and told him to "hurry up" because he had a blow dry to do. Needless to say, he missed several areas, so I had gray spots showing through. I had to redo the color myself at home. He told me the color had to stay on for 45 minutes. After 55 minutes I finally got up and went to the front desk to say I needed to be rinsed. He was standing up at the front talking to another employee and acted annoyed that I wanted rinsed. He said his timer was on silent, so he didn't hear it. He aggressively shampooed me only 1 time. Shampoo and water were flying all over and even hit the wall next to me. Without asking, he slathered on a lot of conditioner. The service was so bad, I didn't even want to leave a tip, but I did since it was near the holiday. I may try the branch downtown, but will never go back to this shop. All they have to do is apply color and rinse and they can't even do...
