We had a wonderful dinner here tonight after securing a reservation two weeks ago when the ones for today opened. This place is really popular right now, with not a lot of tables, so definitely plan in advance when making reservations, or be very flexible when people cancel their upcoming ones.
The restaurant itself is small (quite narrow, including the bathroom, so be warned) but cozy, and has a welcoming atmosphere. Our server was very helpful with our questions about the menu and wines, and the recommendation of the wine of the day was delicious and paired well with our meal.
For the two of us, our order of banchan, salad, and tteokbokki, along with dessert, was the perfect amount, but order another dish if you have a big appetite (our server suggested 4 dishes for a table of two). The variety of banchan was nice, and I thought the potato salad was especially well-flavored. The fruits in the salad were amazing, and that had a good mix of crunch and softness.
The tteokbokki was indisputably the star of the meal for me, a beautiful fusion of Korean and Italian flavors with the savory and slightly spicy gochujang and the creamy stracciatella coating the chewy rice cakes.
Finally, save a little room for dessert, as the mochi was not too sweet, with nutty sesame flavor and lovely textures. I will definitely be back (when I can...
Read moreOk, first you have to get over that you order and pay for Banchan, lol. But this is their specialty, housemade, delicious Banchan. For 25 dollars you get rice (which is delicious, I even asked what rice they use) and an array of Banchan, which included potato salad, mung bean jelly square, marinated mushrooms, kimchi. We split one order of Banchan and ordered a bunch of other stuff. They change up the Banchan regularly. My only comment would be, since I am paying for it, all the Banchan we had that evening were veggie based. Other reviews etc, they do do Banchan that have meat or seafood. Would love to have had one that satisfied the carnivore in me. We also had the crab and chicken mandu which was my favorite. The Bosaam, braised pork belly that came with napa cabbage, and sauces to dip and wrap, yummy. Chigae made with mushrooms was hot and flavor packed. We also ordered the handroll, I think next time I would get the Hwe, fish salad. Also had dessert a butter mochi, solid but did not wow me. I might skip that and wander out for ice cream somewhere else. The place is tiny, maybe 4-5 tables? and a counter. It's really cozy, cute and so well done. Excellent playlist. The whole experience was greater than the sum of it's parts and absolutely wonderful, I would...
Read moreWalking into Sunn's on a dark, rainy December night is like putting on your favorite sweater. The cozy room is warmly lit and full of happy people devouring chef Sunny Lee's (who formerly ran the beloved pop up Banchan by Sunny) homey but creative Korean food. We started with a special selection of banchan, each tastier than the last, and moved on to the house chicory salad which basically begs to be eaten with your hands which everyone else is doing so don't be shy. Then, the main course, a short rib and winter squash stew that felt as healing as it was savory and delicious. I was surprised to overhear the host say it was opening night, the service was convivial and smooth and the chefs looked relaxed and confident cooking in a tiny kitchen behind the blonde wood bar. Better get there quick, one day old and the...
