TLDR: A new addition to the Herald Square area. SURAM Sushi & Udon is the same chain from Hudson Yards but instead of ramen they have udon. For me it kind of reminded me of udon but in a ramen base.
Stopped in for lunch to give it a try. The Tonbara Niku lunch special is priced at $23 which is the same as dinner but with the addition of a green salad, a California roll and chicken gyoza.
Salad was standard lunch special size, carrrot/ginger dressing - fine. Chicken gyoza came with two pieces, not bad - think Ajinomoto gyoza but deep fried.
The udon came, basically a tonkotsu broth with chili oil and some mushrooms and udon. Chashu was torched nicely but it tasted like a spicy tonkotsu ramen but with the noodles swapped. I never got the California Roll which when I asked about - I was told it was a typo.
Not trying to nitpick but I did partially base my decision to eat here because of that. I wasn't expecting a whole roll, maybe a 4 piece. I did get a mochi at the end which I assume was based on my follow-up for the California Roll.
Overall - it's not bad but think there might be better options for sushi or udon in the area. If you're craving to scratch that itch...
Read moreI visited this sushi and udon restaurant last night, and everything was exceptional! I started with the salmon carpaccio and tuna tiradito—both were incredibly fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. 😋
For the main course, I ordered the sushi & sashimi deluxe along with a house salad with ginger dressing. The sushi platter was stunning in design and tasted just as good as it looked fresh, balanced, and absolutely delicious. And the ginger dressing on the salad? Honestly, the best I’ve ever had in my life!
I also tried their Yuzu Blossom cocktail, and it was so refreshing, light, citrusy, and the perfect complement to the meal. 🍸✨
The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the service was outstanding. The staff were so friendly and attentive, they kept refilling my water without even being asked, which I appreciated so much because I was super dehydrated.
Great quality, great prices, and an all-around amazing dining experience. Highly recommended!...

Let me tell you what, we were pleasantly surprised! this little spot had the most amazing udon that iv done near ever eaten. the next best place would be in Japan (back in '89). the host was amazing and the ambiance was perfect! me and the group reminisced about our glory days while eating some delicious Udon and sushi! If we come back to NYC we will be coming here again for sure! thank you for the kind hospitality!
