Worst sushi I've ever had! We walk in and I thought it suspicious that the place was empty in New York city at almost 8pm. We were starved. Ordered from the extremely overpriced menu, the specialty rolls were ridiculous in price. Every thing is an add-on charge including "inside out". We thought perhaps the place was dead due to the price being too much. Ordered our food, waiter didn't bother telling us that it comes with only brown rice. It was hard and did not taste good. The Toro roll was mushy and minced. I was told to not add anything to it as it will spoil the taste but it wasn't even a piece of fish. I wish I was told it wasn't a real piece of fish and instead was a mushy substance that may be some fish mixed in. It was the leftover bits ground up together and tasted awful. The sashimi was ok though they added some sweet eel sauce to my salmon which killed it for me and the toro sashimi had an after taste but wish I had just gotten just sashimi, however the price was too ridiculous for a single piece. Oh and the Wasabi did not even pretend to be Wasabi. I would never go back there and never recommend this place. Not sure how they got over 4 stars. My friend felt the same about her food and she felt sick after our meal. One of her rolls was supposed to be Yellowtail with avocado. I opened one and there was just teeny bits of fish randomly in the roll. Picture attached. I was searching for the piece of Yellowtail. I found a few little bits randomly mixed in with the rice. Most disgusting display of cutting corners and screwing customers at an exorbitant price. Overall not worth it. Im a sushi lover and this turned me off for a while. I Will NEVER go back.

Because I was staying at the Hilton Garden / Midtown, I walked across the street and saw this place. They have outdoor seating on the street but interior was warm and inviting. They have a large sushi bar and a nice private dining area where you can take off your shoes and dine in privacy, perfect for a work or family occasion. Because I was dining alone I preferred to eat in a table in the back and felt comfortable. The menu was decent but not a traditional Japanese restaurant but I did enjoy the Black Cod Misozaki (fish marinated in miso and lightly grilled, it was very delicate and the chef prepared a beautiful garnish of avocado and ikura / salmon roe.) it wasn’t enough for dinner so I also ordered two pieces of Ikura and Uni (sea urchin) with a glass of Pinot Grigio - I decided not to order miso soup or rice… that costs extra. The total bill was $76. Including tax. Granted that the seafood flew from California, like me… and I wondered why the heck was I ordering sushi when I could get it back in CA! 🥴 Anyway, dinner was fine, the wasabi wasn’t real it was the squirt kind, no edamame was offered, no hot towels for the hands, no orange sherbet or tangerine for dessert, and the sad thing was that it wasn’t plated aesthetically (w/o garnish, at these prices?) I felt the service could have been more hospitable too. Also they locked the doors so I had to be let out because there were three rough looking guys tripping out right next to the door entrance. I guess the manager didn’t care about my personal safety as he quickly locked the door behind me! 🥴 I won’t come again.

I come here all the time. The head chef/owner is from Japan and studied in Paris. The atmosphere is really authentic; if you can, get the tatami room for a really unique experience. A good thing about this place is there are a ton of vegetarian/vegan options, and they’re so great you should try them even if you eat meat. I recommend the spicy salmon carpaccio, toro rolls, wagyu sushi (absolute must have), and kanpyo rolls (they’re vegan—a kind of pickled gourd—and amazing). For comfort food get the Mentaiko udon. Favorite drink is definitely the lychee martini, although I like a glass of plum wine (both are sweet, if you like that kind of thing).

We have been a fan from the inception when they first opened on the 34th Street probably about 20 years ago. Our recent experience left us heartbroken by the way they have changed. The sashimi consisted of small tiny pieces as if cut from the tail end like a patch work. They presented a check with a processing fees tacked on. It makes me wonder if the business is that tough, however, degraded quality is beyond acceptable to be on my list of favorite sushi establishment.

In response to the owner:

When we are asked to recommend a good sushi restaurant, my husband and I both used to say Sushi Sennin, almost simultaneously with a glee and pride.

The evening we were there, it was not busy at all, perhaps 3-4 tables occupied including ours during our stay.

What troubles me the most is the fact that we were made to feel like we were served leftovers. I used to believe that you are a restaurant of quality with utmost standard and the thought of serving something subpar should not even be on your plate. I believe it is a matter of pride and self-respect and respect for those who come to your establishment with trust.

As for the service fee charged, this is not the main problem and I accept that mistakes can occur. No need to ponder on this.

Good...
