Seriously good and authentic Mexican food! I had to check this place out after seeing what other reviewers had said about this place and since I live in the area there was no reason not to on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Now before I continue I should admit, I'm biased for little small privately owned, and in this case probably family owned, restaurants. I come in with the notion that whoever owns these small operated restaurants bring a little something from their past into their work and business. Maybe a slight flavor or two from childhood meals, a decor and atmosphere that anchors in authenticity, a certain charm that is plainly absent from franchises and big name restaurants. That's exactly what I found here at Taqueria El Gallo Azteca! Add great food to the mix of authenticity and charm and you have a restaurant that shouldn't be missed by anyone entering Staten Island via the ferry or Staten Islanders themselves. The only issue was the cash only requirements, but that alone didn't justify 1 less star in my opinion since I've been to lesser restaurants that were over hyped and were unjustifiably cash only. I look for places like this, but I never thought I would have one so...
Read moreDo not be fooled by the small size of this restaurant. It's actually one of the best legitimate Mexican taco places located in Staten Island. If you want your traditional tacos, this is the place to go! They are fresh and served with an amazing green or red salsa that will leave you asking for more. My favorite tacos are the chicken and "lengua" tacos with cacti (also known as the tacos Aztecas). This restaurant also serves tortas, entrees, and quesadillas, in case you're not in the mood for the tasty tacos.
Ps- Do NOT forget to bring cash, unfortunately this small restaurant does not accept debit or credit cards so the owners do ask for you to bring money in hand. But do not fret if you forget because there is an ATM machine...

I always noted to myself that I should go, but on those days a Sri Lankan restaurant further up the hill or something else was the destination. I knew somehow that the Aztec Rooster would be there the next time, just as it has been since I've been coming to Staten Island. When it finally happened, the first thing that caught my eye was the house special taco azteca, a creation made of steak, cactus, and cooked onions. It is almost too large for its tortillas, which are better than average and griddled back to life nicely. The green avocado salsa it comes with adds a nice kick and some necessary juices to...
