In most NY bagel places the same person to take your order is the person who rings you up. If that's not the case you have to trust that your cashier can keep the orders organized as they come out, or you just hand it to your customer wherever they are on line to pay. Sadly this place had one person taking orders and two people at the single cash register. With three people ahead of me in line the person who took my order handed it to one of the people at the cashier. Even though she said my order, and my order was labeled, and she pointed to me, the cashier opened up my bagel to see what it was. That made my bagel cold!
Then I found out a Sausage Egg and Cheese is SIX DOLLARS when I handed him I five. Then he tried to jokingly charge me for a coffee because I had Starbucks in my hand. After I handed him a dollar he couldn't remember I gave him a five, and then I had to add up his change for him when I was already pretty angry I was paying six dollars for a cold sandwich. The cheese was also cold on the outside of the eggs instead of melted and folded in like every other...
Read moreThere are quite a few bagel places in Astoria, but Toast & Roast was my go to when I lived there. The bagels are as good as any in the neighborhood, and despite not having as wide an offering as other places, still more than enough choice and always fresh.
Toast & Roast also has better coffee than the other bagel places in Astoria, and my kids love their hot chocolate and apple cider (iced in the summer, warm in the winter.)
Breakfast platters (eggs, home fries, pancakes, bacon, sausage, etc.) was exactly what you would expect. Not gourmet, but that isn't what you're going to T&R for.
Sandwiches were also exactly what you would expect.
A few times I got their premade salads to have later in the day and was never disappointed. Like the bagels, they were tasty and a good size for the price.
And the last reason for my 5 star review: the service. Competent and friendly. Really all you need when you're getting a bagel,...
Read moreThis is the best breakfast sandwich spot I've found in Astoria. Let me tell you about two of their sandwiches:
Lox Bagel Sandwich: They are generous with the lox and it is very good quality--not that mushy bland pink stuff that looks like fish bologna. It's marbled and translucent: I think it might be sliced off a real salmon filet in-house. The bagels themselves are great, and the sandwich is assembled with care and stays together as you eat it. Get this with a toasted bagel and dill cream cheese and it stands up to Russ & Daughters.
Sausage egg and cheese: They just nail all the details. Eggs are cooked perfectly (attached picture is of a 2-egg over medium sandwich), roll is toasted, sausage patty is the perfect size with good flavor, just a splash of hot sauce, and the sandwich is assembled with care so it stays together as you eat...
