18 Must-Try Nyonya Desserts in NYC for All the Pandan Lovers 🍃

First time trying out the famed Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, and boy oh boy was it as underwhelming as it was expensive. I went here with a friend, both of us craving ice cream on a hot summer day, and our experience immediately soured when the worker said that they did not accept cash. Is cash simply not a form of currency anymore? Extremely inconvenient and also limiting, especially since me and my friend are students without any form of credit card—so I was instead I had to pay ten dollars and receive absolutely no change. The worker was extremely nice and sympathetic about it but I still can’t fathom what kind of big brand business just decided that cash wasn’t useful any more and didn’t even have a single cash register or loose change. The horrible experience got worse when I received my order—a simple waffle cone with strawberry ice cream scoops with rainbow sprinkles. A classic that a renowned ice cream brand surely couldn’t and wouldn’t mess up, no? Wrong. Absolutely wrong. The strawberry ice cream didn’t even remotely TASTE like strawberries—moreso bland, generic dollar store ice cream with a shot of red food coloring. The only thing remotely good was the waffle cone, but even then it was close to ten dollars for the most mediocre and tasteless piece of “ice cream” I’ve ever tasted in my life. You’re so much better off buying ice cream from ice cream trucks unlike this absolutely clown excuse of “upscale” ice cream. Crazy tourist trap and money trap.

A Delightful Surprise! Let me start by saying, I walked into this place completely by chance. I wasn't even looking for an ice cream shop, but I’m so glad I found it. The location is great, and the interior is warm and inviting. The lighting is just right, and the pleasant colors and tasteful decor create a really comfortable atmosphere. Now, here's what truly impressed me: I’m allergic to dairy, and finding a creamy, satisfying ice cream alternative is usually a challenge. But they had an amazing vegan chocolate ice cream that completely blew me away. I honestly don’t know how they made it so rich and creamy without using milk, it was incredible. I’ve tried so many water-based sorbets in the past, but they never give that smooth, indulgent texture. This one did. For someone like me who’s always craving real ice cream but limited by allergies, this was a real treat. And for those who do enjoy dairy, the shop offers a wide variety of classic and creative flavors, so there’s truly something for everyone. Highly recommended, especially if you’re looking for quality, flavor, and a place that’s mindful of dietary needs!

I had the worst experience with this location via grubhub. I ordered a chocolate chip cookie dough vegan flavor and Two vanilla bean flavor. I added in the notes that Vegan ice cream please indicating that is the flavor I originally wanted. When I got the order the people gave me a cookie ( which i did not order) and two vanilla bean. My husband called and told them about the mistakes. Someone called my phone who called him self a manager was soooo unprofessional on the phone. He said he started off by saying I'm returning a call because you complained to one of the employees. Let's think about the reason I called it's because the order was was wrong to begin with . When this so called manager talked to me like this I was shocked! It was my money that I spent you didn't loose any money in this process. I will never spend my money at this location and the manager is very unprofessional and reflects poorly on Van Leeuwen. the manager then proceeds to tell me that we sent the two vanilla bean because it was listed ( i understand but you could of called and said hello I saw the notes we do not have the flavor available ) . this team and location lacks professionalism, communication and It is embarrassing that they are located next to a NYC landmark and consider them self a company that reflects NYC. I spent over $50 for this order to be spoken to like a subway rat. You would think after the pandemic organizations would know how to talk to customers and have better respect. It's obvious your night time manager got his customer service skills from the streets. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO ANY OTHER...

The guy behind the counter was really unnecessarily rude to me and my friend. He charged my friend twice because he didn’t notice I went and paid for my ice cream with a different server while he served my friend. This, of course, is a really honest mistake and isn’t the issue. The issue was how he blamed me after refusing to believe that I even paid for it in the first place, saying “no he didn’t” aggressively until his very kind co-worker confirmed that I did pay for my ice cream (he didn’t start with asking if I even did pay). This was really unfortunate because of how gentle my friend was when she went up to him to ask about why she was charged so much. It was out of the blue. After he refunded her he was still really unpleasant to us and then gave some attitude to customers in the line behind us. Not trying to be “that guy” either, working around Rockefeller center is stressful but this was some nasty customer service and was pretty yucky to sit with after while sitting in the store.

The other two workers were very gracious and kind to us and the others in the store. I love this store and the ice cream so always stop in if you can. Just hope that this...
