Nice bar with an unfriendly barman. I was here back in April, this was my first time in the US and first time in a bar in the US. I understood the tipping culture and was more than prepared to tip 15% for the one drink I purchased. However, I did not really understand the process of how to add a tip to a bill. In most countries I've visited, including my own home country, we simply add the amount to the card reader ourselves. I was a little confused because the bartender took my card away from me and then gave it back and I was under the impression I had paid without adding a tip. I appreciate his job was not to teach me what to do but he was extremely rude and said "anybody can watch a YouTube video before they come here". This coming from a person I am trying to give money to wasn't appreciated. His whole demeanour was off and I felt unwelcome (the bar was empty). On a plus, his bad attitude did actually help me better prepare myself for the many other bars and restaurants in NYC, all of which had much better staff. Woodhul was the bar closest to my hotel and yet I only went that once because of that one bartender, who let's the whole place down. I would not recommend this place to anybody, especially not people visiting NYC...
Read moreWe thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our visit here. It features a decently mixed selection of interesting wine, but it isn't an overly expansive list. You'll have options, but shouldn't be overwhelmed. If you are a sommelier you may be disappointed with the choices, but for a casual wine drinker it's a good way to try new things.
The atmosphere is comfortable and the staff is helpful. We got both wine and food. Neither of which was lacking in quality.
We tried a Cabarnet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Malvasia Orange wine. The menu seemed to identify the notes of each well. The reds were nice and enjoyable. The orange was a little peculiar, but worth trying.
The most notable critique to offer was that the Mediterranean Flatbread, while thoroughly enjoyable, did not actually have much of a Mediterranean flavor. The ingredients were correctly listed on the menu, but chorizo does not help invoke what I associate with Mediterranean flavors.
We also picked on the Californian on Pumpernickel sandwich (which does come with chips) and the Mashed Avocado Bowl. Both of which were very good with interesting ingredients that all...
Read moreI have known Dan Lathrum, one of the owners, for some time now about 10 years to be exact. He is a very good man and a great bartender. Its rare to walk into a bar/restaurant, find the owner serving drinks to the patrons. It adds a level of service to the experience that people don't forget. The beers are great and the food is very good too. Tommy, the other bar keep is excellent as well and I always enjoy being welcomed to such a friendly environment and watching old American classic movies while hanging with the locals.
The other weekend I hosted an event there and they were really excited about that. I got a few films to screen and invited about 20 of my friends to the evening. They were very accommodating and happy to have be invite all my friends to the place. I have been thinking about what I will want to do next as a follow up, but regardless I am pretty sure that Custom will be happy to...
