6/22/17 Update: We had Summer Solstice Dinner on 6/21/17 and ordered the mung bean noodles, the lamb, soup dumplings, spicy fish fillet, and the Do Hua (soft tofu). Again, the service was excellent.
The lamb and fish dishes were over seasoned, like, really salty. This is consistent with the last experience and when we told our waiter our thoughts he said it was a consistent complaint about the fish dish, but not for the lamb dish.
The soup dumplings had no 'soup' inside the bao, so that was a major negative. All the other smaller plates were good.
Pretty spot on. The flavors are great and the decor and ambiance is just as good. We ordered the Mung Bean Noodles, which had great consistency and the sauce is balanced. It's not very spicy and i don't think I tasted the Sichuan peppercorns either, but still great.
We also ordered the Sichuan Cold Noodles, which was slightly sweet, but still balanced with the savory and the sichuan spice. The Husband and Wife Special was also pretty spot on. There was more beef than tendon, but it was also well balanced.
For the entrees we ordered the Ma Po Tofu and the Cumin Lamb. The Ma Po is good, but it doesn't stand out much compared to other Ma Po Tofu. The cumin lamb was full of flavor and just the right amount of spice. My favorite part was the garlic. It was marinated prior to being cooked so it was slightly sweet, while maintaining the essence of the garlic spice. It was probably my favorite part of the cumin lamb dish, which is odd, I know.
One of the best part of the experience is the staff. We had Cass who helped us and she was absolutely amazing and patient.
The restaurant should get a 5-star rating with what I'm describing, but I've only been there, once. Consistency is key, but I have yet to try the rest of the menu, too.
Please note that there's no...
Read moreUPDATE: Ordered from doordash the second time and had Ma po tofu and the poached wontons in chili sauce (must get) they were delicious! Skip the scallion pancakes if you’re doing delivery as they’ll be soggy in the container.
3.5 stars based off last order. I have mixed feelings as the first time I went to BOAF it was delicious. This time we ordered:
Wood ears with pickled peppers: simple, you can’t go wrong with wood ear mushrooms. I liked this dish as the beauty is in the mushrooms and not overwhelmed by flavors Thousand year egg and tofu rolls: this dish was lacking in flavor and presentation was not desirable. The pepper on top was overwhelming -Husband and wife special: this is the best dish as the sliced beef and tripe were perfectly cut and thinly sliced. Just the perfect amount of spice. Love the tripe! -Eggplant with chili: not what we imagined at all, we pictured a more braised eggplant but this eggplant was just... healthy? Again, too much pepper topping on top -Scallion pancakes: just skip this. I feel like Win Son and BOAF just don’t do scallion pancakes quite right... -Shrimp dumplings: underwhelming, better shrimp dumplings at hole in the walls. Filling was way too much, but it will definitely fill you up -Poached wontons in chili sauce: this was good, but nothing special and again could be found in any hole in the wall. Sauce is a tad sweet -Three pepper chicken: I should’ve remembered that in Chinese cuisine there is a dish where the peppers are 70% of the dish and the chicken 30%. What I didn’t like was that the chicken was cut wayyy too small. They were little morsels which I suppose was to go with the size of the peppers but I wish we skipped this dish. Chicken needs to...
Read moreSczheuan cuisine. Had heard all good things about this place since it opened. Maybe my expectations were a little high. Tried many things in between all of us in a group. In appetizers ordered Okra with a spicy, Sichuan dipping sauce, Shrimp dumplings and Vegetable Potstickers. The Veg Potstickers were the best had flavor, shrimp dumplings were so bland and just didn’t have any taste. Okra was a in green sauce which had a little too much peppercorn taste to it, were little hard again no particular taste. In the main dish we got Curiously tasty chicken with one spice level. The way the server had explained to us was it was stir fried with onions and some vegetables. This wasn’t dry when it came, had little brown sauce and had potatoes and just tasted boiled. Very disappointed. We just took a bite and left it as it is. Spicy fish- this was good and the fish they had used was good, soft and was served with scallions, dried pepper. Was more like an appetizer. Portion size was large. Fried rice with mustard shoots – this was fried rice with egg and spices. Was tasteful. Service wise also was slow. We had a reservation but on arrival the host was talking to the previous group and took 10-15 min with them before attending to us. Has a modern look and minimalistic ambiance. It’s a long room with bar in the end. Th center has a long table with seating on either end. On both sides there were tables and booth arrangements. Maybe we didn’t select the proper dishes the first time, but certainly not up to our...
