Short version: The food is great, and the service is comically horrible in every possible way. I will start by saying I usually post positive reviews and I am only posting this one so that people can know and make their choices. I am not one of those people that just complains all the time about every restaurant. We visited Swahili Village because my friend was visiting the US for the first time from Kenya, and we wanted to be able to offer some familiar foods. The food was absolutely delicious. The service was comically horrible. When we arrived we requested ice water for everyone, and ordered a flaming margarita, chai tea, and a draft beer. We got the water quickly, but with very little ice. OK, that I will chalk up to being like being in Kenya. The appetizers came quickly and were lovely and yummy. AFTER the appetizers we finally got the tea. But the tea was still COLD (room temperature) and the milk was SOUR. The waiter took the tea and half way through the meal brought tea again, but it was the SAME tea, with the sour milk, warmed up!!! About 20 or 30 minutes after ordering the waiter told us that there was an issue with the computer going down or something and so he had to repeat the order again and that he apologizes that there would be a delay. OK, that is understandable. But why donât we have the Margarita or Draft beer? I also ask for ICE and more water. We also ask for appetizer potatoes to snack on while we wait for the food. He comes eventually with the flaming Margarita, which was just a little alcohol flame on a half lime on top. Then he comes to tell us that he did NOT order the potatoes we asked for because the kitchen said âThey will be able to send the food soon anywayâ. I said, âUmm, whatever. Then can I please have ICE, and more water?â We then get the food, which was delicious. And after an HOUR we finally get the draft beer. I ask again for ICE and more water. He finally brings a pitcher, and I take him from him so I can pour out of the side and get some ICE, since he did not bring any glasses or bowls of ice. I told him after two hours all I have is a single ice cube for every one of us. Please give me the pitcher. Despite that there was a known issue with the food, and only two other tables of customers no manager ever stopped by to say âHi, how is everything tonight?â We decided not to bother ordering coffee, DEFINITELY not tea, or any dessert, since we figured it would take another two hours. The total was over $300. For the 5 of us. If they thought that we did not deserve good service because we were not spending enough I would respond that we would have ordered more drinks if we ever had gotten the FIRST ones. So the failure points were: 1-no manager ever checked in, 2-drinks extremely slow, 3-no QC to make sure mil not turned and tea hot, even AFTER being told it was bad, 4- tech issues that really would usually result in a free snack or SOMETHING as an apology. So, there was a problem with the server, the manager, the kitchen AND the computer. However, to be fair, it was exactly like being in Kenya! Just at 100 times the cost.

Saw this restaurant had opened in Newark on tik tok. My friends and I had to give it a try! Ambience - the decor was lovely. It was a very nice presentation. The music was at a good volume and they played really good variety of music. No dress code so come how you feel. People were dressed up and others were casual. Service - Amazing service. Everyone was friendly, we got great recommendations for foods and drinks. We didnât have to wait long for the drinks or food. Drinks - I got the tropical splash which was delicious and pretty strong. The drink was sweet from the blackberry but you could taste the rum. I also got the Tropical Infusion. This drink was less sweet. It was tasty and though I couldnât taste the liquor in this drink, things were leaning a little after finishing it. Food - For appetizers we tried the Samosas, the chicken wings, and the Samaki filet bites. The samosas were really delicious. The outside was crunchy and the inside was well seasoned and slightly spicy. The chicken wings were good as well. The rub on it was a nice sweet and smokey flavor. The Samaki filet bites were my favorite. The flavor was so bold and it was just a party of deliciousness in my mouth. For my main dish I got the goat stew/mbuzi kaanga with spinach and jollof rice. We also got the Mokimo try. Everything was really really really tasty. The goat stew was nicely cooked. The sauce slightly thick. The meat was also tender. It went really well with the spinach and the jollof rice. The spinach was tasty as well. The coconut milk gave it a really creamy sweet taste. The star of the dish was the jollof rice. It was absolutely mouthwatering. Thereâs were so many spices and flavors in the jollof rice. I couldnât get enough. I wish I ordered a second round loll. We talked about the rice all night đ. The Mokimo was actually weirdly really good. Idk why it was so good itâs peas, mash potatoes, onions, corn and sautĂŠed onions. It was a weird flavor but a really good weird flavor like pistachio ice cream. For dessert we got the mango mousse and the chocolate cake. The mango mousse wasnât my favorite. My friend described it as mango air and thatâs what it tasted like. The mango flavor was just too light for me. It was okay. I liked the chocolate cake better. It was so much chocolate 𤤠and it had different kinds of chocolate flavors throughout the cake. We ate a lot of food lolll. We didnât plan on eating all that food but Iâm glad we did. Definitely visit and eat everything, itâs all delicious đ.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Swahili Village in Newark, and I must say it was an absolute delight! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a vibrant atmosphere that immediately transported me to the heart of East Africa. The restaurant's interior is beautifully decorated, featuring African-inspired artwork and comfortable seating. The ambiance is lively and inviting, perfect for both intimate dinners and group gatherings. The staff members were friendly, attentive, and well-versed in the menu offerings, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Now, let's talk about the food! Swahili Village truly excels in bringing the flavors of East Africa to Newark. The menu offers an extensive selection of authentic Swahili dishes, each bursting with aromatic spices and unique combinations of ingredients. Whether you're a fan of grilled meats, vegetarian delights, or seafood, there's something for everyone here. During my visit, I had the pleasure of trying their signature dish, the Zanzibar Mix. This delectable platter showcased a delightful fusion of flavors, featuring succulent grilled chicken, tender beef mishkaki, flavorful pilau rice, and a variety of mouthwatering samosas. Each bite was a revelation, and I savored the harmonious blend of spices that danced on my palate. The menu also includes traditional favorites like Nyama Choma (grilled meats), Mchuzi wa Kuku (chicken in a rich tomato-based sauce), and Ugali (a staple cornmeal dish). The portions were generous, and the presentation was impeccable. To complement the meal, Swahili Village offers a range of refreshing beverages, including traditional Kenyan tea, tropical fruit juices, and the famous Tusker beer. Don't forget to indulge in their delectable desserts like Mandazi (sweet Swahili donuts) or the creamy Halwa. In addition to the outstanding food and service, Swahili Village also hosts live music and cultural performances, providing a truly immersive experience. It's evident that the restaurant takes pride in promoting and celebrating Swahili culture, making every visit a memorable one. Overall, Swahili Village in Newark is a hidden gem that deserves recognition for its exceptional cuisine, welcoming ambiance, and top-notch service. Whether you're a Swahili food enthusiast or simply looking to explore new culinary horizons, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit. I can't wait to return and indulge in their flavorsome offerings once again!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Swahili Village Restaurant in Newark, NJ, and I must say it was a night to remember! From the moment I walked in, I could sense the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that makes this place truly unique. #### âĄď¸ Ambiance Swahili Village is excellently laid out with a perfect blend of quiet dining spaces and a high-energy party scene. Despite the delineation, there's a seamless fluidity between these two areas. If you want a quieter evening, there's a section for that. But if you're in the mood to party, the livelier part of the restaurant won't disappoint â just keep in mind that the music gets progressively louder as the night goes on. Our spot was on the party side per my friendâs request, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric! #### đ Parking & Safety Finding parking was a breeze. On a bustling Friday night around 8 PM, I scored free street parking! However, if street parking isn't your thing, there's the option of a valet service, a paid lot right out front, and a paid parking garage just around the corner. Despite varying opinions about Newark, I felt completely safe. The ongoing efforts to make the area cleaner and safer were evident and commendable. #### đ˝ď¸ Food Now, let's talk about the food â a true highlight of the evening. The grilled chicken was an unexpected delight. It was far from bland, bursting with tender, juicy flavors that left me pleasantly surprised. Do yourself a favor and try it. Itâs a dish that stands out in the best way possible! #### đš Drinks & Entertainment The drinks were well-crafted and just right for the evening. However, a word of caution â on the party side, the music does get cranked up as the night progresses, transitioning into a full-on party/bar scene around 11 PM to 3 AM. The ratio of men to women skewed heavily towards the men during my visit, something to consider based on your preferences. In terms of cleanliness, I was impressed. The bathrooms were well-maintained, which is always a plus in my book when dining out. Overall, Swahili Village offers a dynamic and enjoyable dining and nightlife experience that caters to different moods and preferences. Whether you're there for a quiet dinner or ready to tear up the dance floor, this place covers all the bases. I highly recommend giving it a try! #NewarkNJ #SwahiliVillage #RestaurantReview #Foodie #Nightlife #GreatEats #WorthTheVisit

Iâve been coming to Swahili for over 10 years and this is the first time Iâm putting in a formal complaint. I go to all 3 locations and have watched this restaurant grow from one Beltsville location to now 3 on the east coast After the Man Utd and Arsenal game, we came in at 10:30pm and there was a 30 mins wait which is expected: 45 mins pass and they tell me another 30 mins. The vibes were nice and we were at the bar so we didnât mind. Another 45 mins and I see the host at the front desk. She proceeds to tell me that she called me. I showed her my call log to indicate that I didnât receive a missed call and she then tells me that thereâs something wrong with my phone. At this point Iâm livid, because how are you a host and rude to customers. She tries to blame the other 2 hosts and I let her know that you transposed a digit which is why I didnât get the call. She continues to tell me that she canât create tables - again, rude! Iâm asking for the next available table, I understand you are busy. Sorata then steps in and miraculously finds us a table within 5 mins. Please - keep Sorata, she is amazing!!! Our waiter was Lavender- the sweetest soft spoken waitress. We sit and wait and after an hour Lavender tells us that the kitchen has run out of food at 1:30am. I am beyond livid, I tell her to give me the check because Iâm walking out. Within 5 mins, the platter I ordered is sitting in front of me. Why must we go through this to get service? It shouldnât take 3 hours to get food. Lavender tried her best but the kitchen is a mess. The food was excellent, but not what I ordered. Overall - horrible experience! I had guests from out of town and I wanted to give them a good experience. This left a bad taste in my mouth The hostess with the horrible attitude has 2 nose piercings and was wearing a blonde wig. I am complaining because this is my second rude encounter with her. She should NOT be greeting people or in the service industry if she has no people skills or decorum. I want African businesses to flourish but this is NOT how you do it!
