We arrived at 6pm on a Saturday night and the place was a ghost town. We have a rule to avoid places if during dinner hour there is no one there. We then walked the Newport strip and checked out several menus but were not looking for fried food, pub fare, rich seafood dishes. We even put our names on a waiting list at a very popular restaurant that was packed but still felt like we wanted something new! We decided to walk back to Asiatico and just give it a try. Why not!! The reviews were great but we have fallen into that trap more than a few times. The place was still empty when we returned however we noticed a sign that read " Good sushi is not cheap and bad sushi is not good". This was a good sign. We were greeted by a kind gentleman asking if we had a reservation......Reservations? what? We were told that there was only 2 spots or the bar( place still empty 😶)
We asked if the fish was local and not farmed raised and the answers were very pleasing. We ordered 4 rolls and right as we were receiving our rolls the place started to get packed. The food came in a very timely manner and it was EXCELLENT!!! The fish was so fresh the flavors were incredible and the service was perfect in every way. This is not your average sushi. It was was clever, stimulating, bright, and the tuna was like butter. The mexican amd soft shell crab rolls were the BOMB!!! This is now our favorite place to eat in Newport. The bento box is what we'll eat next time for sure!
Having worked in the restaurant industry for 27 years from NYC fine dining to organic farm to table on the west coast it was my complete pleasure to dine at this fine establishment.
Thank you so much for a...
Read moreDelicious. Just what I was hoping for. They had Gluten free soy sauce too! I have allergies and didn't have any repercussions at all which happens sometime, even with "gluten free" sushi places. I would recommend to anyone. It's definitely not a super high end hipster sushi place but you do pay for it since good fresh fish (you can taste it's fresh) is a premium, and since it's the only sushi place around, but I don't call that a negative neccisarily, it's just supply and demand. I got three rolls, all between $13-15 each. It was delicious and I would consider myself a pretty big Sushi lover. I have been to Japan twice however this makes me nowhere near an expert though I imagine i am a better judge than most street urchin sushi lovers. I went here on a Friday afternoon (weekends are busy in Newport due to tourism so I favor weekdays in any tourist area) and there were only a handful of tourist (like myself) here eating so waiting for service was not existant, but the attmosphere was nice, the place was clean, and everyone working here was very attentive and gracious in anything I needed. The man behind the counter making the sushi was no other than the owner/opperator I presume since another local business man came in and spoke to him, something with his sign out front while he was making my three sushin rolls. I enjoyed my sushi, it was delicious. The two seats at the bar were reserved so I sat in the closest booth available to the episcenter of sushi Nirvana and attempted to observe while chatting with my girlfriend, and the owner seemed to be enjoying his sushi making craft. Everything was deliteful and I wouldn't hesitate to go here...

Let's be honest, high quality sushi will not be cheap so if you're complaining about the cost, maybe good quality isn't for you. When it comes to sushi you really DO get what you pay for, and who wants to gamble with raw fish?
Sushi is a family favorite and we have been to many many places around Oregon and several other states searching for the best. We have one favorite place in our area, but aside from that really haven't found another place worth writing home about. Really outstanding sushi is believe it or not, hard to find.
Unassuming and tucked away, Asiatico not only offers incredibly high quality fish, they have figured out the art of balance. Just enough perfectly cooked rice, just enough fish, nothing is too much or too little which makes for the perfect bite! Nothing is fishy tasting or smelling and they trim their fish very well too - so you don't end up with sinew or grey meat which many other places try to pass off (its super chewy and unpleasant). The balance of sauce, smoke or spice is perfect so nothing overshadows the star of the show -the fish. Plating presentations are lovely and staff go above and beyond, are incredibly kind and helpful too!
I'm gluten free and they were extremely helpful with that, I had plenty of delicious options. Wonderful experience, worth the price! ...
