My Husband and I have been patrons of the Lucky Thai several times over the years. The food has always been good and we always looked forward to going there - even at the times when the service was slow because the food was worth it. Today, however; was different. When we ordered our food my husband who cannot eat shellfish ordered a chicken soup. He asked the person waiting on us if it had shellfish and was told no. While having this discussion he was pointing at the menu and as a result the wait person misunderstood his order and brought the wrong soup - normally we are not picky people and would have been ok with the misunderstanding but given that he cannot eat shell fish we notified the person who took our order that he had ordered chicken. The wait staff then refused to take the order back and told us we would be charged regardless. I worked in the restaurant business for many years and have never once done this to anyone - A misunderstanding is something that happens everywhere and the way it was always handled by us was to provide customer service not to blame the customer when the incident was clearly a misunderstanding - Unless of course "I want chicken" somehow is not..."chicken"? The sad thing is that the food is actually quite good but for us given the level of customer service and the fact that we were charged for a meal we had to send back is just wrong and that has caused us to rethink our patronage of this restaurant. As an aside - we did leave a tip as we don't believe in screwing an employee out of money they are working hard to earn. We will in all likelihood not be back. There are other Thai food restaurants in the area that are also good who perhaps are still knowledgeable about what "customer...
Read moreWe went 30min out of our way to pickup takeaway from this Thai restaurant, and it didn't disappoint.
There is something for everyone on the online menu, with plenty of pictures with helpful descriptions. I am a sucker for Red Curry, but it can be hit or miss. I decided to shoot my shot, not knowing if this establishment was authentic or if it would live up to my expectations. I have to say, the portions and amount of components/ingredients within their red curry is astounding, and the flavor is out of this world. I am also a bit of a Thai coffee snob, and theirs definitely hit the mark.
The ordering experience was painless. The menu was helpful, the person taking the order was clear and repeated the order back to me. While I didn't eat in the restaurant, I took a look around while picking up my meal, and it has a lovely ambiance. I was impressed that while we had a large order, it was ready in 15min or less.
If you're ever in the Newport/Toledo area, I would definitely consider stopping in, or calling ahead. I had a wonderful experience, and I can't recommend this...
Read moreWe did an overnight stay in Newport and my spouse is vegan so I had picked out some of the fancier digs w/good-looking but expensive non-meat dishes. She picked out Lucky Thai Elephant based on reviews and budget friendly prices.
We got there before they opened and I was not impressed by the exterior, BUT once inside, the decor is bright and festive with carved wooden elephant heads lining one wall and other tasteful Thai art throughout.
In most restaurants, we often have to wait 20-30 minutes after ordering to get our food, but we got our dishes within five minutes or so, piping hot, flavorful and larger than expected portions. My curry dish had plenty of beef and she had to bring the rest of her Pad Thai back to the hotel in a box. My hot jasmine tea had a hint of vanilla and was so tasty!
Don't judge the book by its cover...Lucky Thai Elephant is right on Highway 101 near the bridge and close to lots of the local hotels. The owners are very nice and if we come back to Newport, we will be eating...
