-Overview- Clearwater is a waterfront restaurant in Newport that boasts a great atmosphere, a view of Yaquina Bay, and excellent food. While it may be a bit pricey, you are paying for top- notch service and a stunning view. It's a great spot to host a birthday dinner, have drinks with colleagues at the bar, or enjoy a romantic date night with a view of the water. -Ambience- After sunset, I went to the restaurant and enjoyed the warm lighting that filled the walls. It provided just enough light to feel cozy. Each table had a candle and salt and pepper shaker that added just the right amount of glow. I was seated upstairs towards the right of the bar near a window, which gave me a clear view of sea lions swimming in the bay. -Service- The waiter was eager and genuinely excited for me to try the food. I had no complaints about the service as my water was filled, my questions were answered, and my food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. -Food- The food was excellent. For my appetizer, I got crispy rice with spicy tuna. The contrast and textures from the tuna and crispy rice along with the umami from the tuna ensured the appetizer didn't live long. For the main course, I opted for the catch of the day. Pan fried rockfish on top of gnocchi with sauted spinach, sundried tomatoes, and a lemon garlic cream sauce. The taste was excellent. The fish was cooked perfectly. This was my second time having gnocchi and it's my favorite. I think the sundried tomatoes with the sauce took the dish to the next level. It's just the right amount of sweetness added to the savory garlic cream. Dessert was a Chai Poached Pear with homemade chai and caramel sauce, candied pecans, and vanilla bean ice cream. I had no idea what to expect when I saw this on the menu, I just knew it sounded different. I'm glad I picked it though, because it was delicious. I forgot how much I love pears. I could easily scoop chunks of the pear with my spoon. The vanilla ice cream was supreme. I am extremely picky about ice cream quality, so this is the best compliment to the dessert I can give. Hats off to Umpqua Creamery for a quality dairy product. I wish I could bottle up the sauces they used. They weren't overly sweet like caramel from the store. It was very balanced yet complex. Something like a rich milky chai caramel flavor. There wasn't anything special about the pecans, but that's ok since they were mainly there to add sweetness and contrast texture. Combine everything together and you get a bomb dessert. I only wish the pear was warm kind of like a cobbler. -Price- Appetizer: Don't expect it to fill you up. You only get four pieces for $13. However, each bite is an experience of flavor. Entree: I think the serving size is reasonable. It's not quite enough to fill me up on my own without an appetizer, but I do tend to eat a lot. The portion size was appropriate, and I felt satiated and satisfied with the flavor after eating it. However, some people may feel that it's too small of a portion for the price ($32). Dessert: This was the best value in my opinion. I would gladly pay for the ice cream alone. -Overall Impression- I would definitely come here again. This is my first food review ever since I decided to only eat out once a week. If you found this helpful at all, feel free to follow me on IG @just_jamon. I'm going to continue to make these reviews and include highlights on Instagram.

My wife and I dined here for our 38th Anniversary in May. We made reservations so we could dine outside. My wife is on chemotherapy drugs and is severely immunocompromised. As a result we hadn't dined inside of a restaurant in over four years. Unfortunately Mother Nature decided to us give rain and wind, so eating outside on their beautiful deck was not an option. We happened to be walking around Bay Blvd before our dinner reservations, so I went in and told the maitre d' about our situation. That we couldn't sit outside and we didn't know what to do. The maitre d', I believe his name is David, was unbelievably nice and accommodating. He said that he would seat us on the lower floor (there are two levels) and that he would give us THE ENTIRE FLOOR so we could dine inside. It was just after 4 PM and he said he thought he could avoid seating anyone else on that level until about 5:30. Clearwater is a pretty big restaurant, and here we were with the entire first floor! He did what he promised and my wife and I celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary INDOORS for the first time in over four years, and we did this without having to wear masks! We were served by a wonderful person named Mary. She was absolutely wonderful. The service was excellent. The food was outstanding. She suggested some drinks for us (my wife's were without alcohol) and they were perfect as well. I hope that anyone reading this never has to deal with what my wife is going through. If you did, you would know how special this dinner was for us, and without David and Mary, we wouldn't have, no, couldn't have had a dinner inside like this on our special day. My wife stopped her chemotherapy a week before so she could go to a nice dinner, so she actually eat a whole meal and feel well afterwards. This was a huge deal for us. We are still in awe on how nice these people were. They made a huge difference on my wife's quality of life. Here it is, a month and a half later, and she is still on an emotional high because of this dinner. Oh yeah, almost forgot. My wife had the Surf and Turf and I had the Filet Mignon. We highly recommend both dishes. Update May 2024: We're back! We celebrated our 39th Wedding Anniversary today. Once again the service and the food were excellent. Maria helped us and she was terrific! She took very good care of us. As far as the food, I had the filet mignon again and my wife had the surf & turf and the chocolate brownie. I also had the blackberry and peach cobbler for dessert. I cannot say enough positive things about Clearwater Restaurant. This was the best steak that I have ever had, and I've had a lot of steaks in my 59 years. I also had the best spinach that I've ever tasted. My wife wanted to eat outside. We dined outdoors on the deck above a BUNCH of sea lions. It was LOUD and it was a lot of fun watching their antics. We could have had a table inside by a window, but the weather was so nice and the sea lions were so entertaining that the outside deck was perfect. I highly recommend Clearwater Restaurant. Do yourself a favor and just go! I recommend the Filet Mignon! So good!

"Clearwater: A Recipe for Disaster" Let me start with this: Clearwater in Newport is in dire need of a wake-up call. The only thing clear about this restaurant is that it desperately needs the executive chef to reassess the capabilities of the kitchen staff. My experience was nothing short of a culinary catastrophe, and the responsibility falls squarely on the leadership in the kitchen. After an agonizing wait of nearly an hour and 45 minutes, I was finally seated upstairs in the bar. By that time, my dining companions had already abandoned ship, but I, naively optimistic after reading glowing reviews, decided to tough it out. That was my first mistake. The surf and turf, a dish that should have been a showcase of fine dining, was a disaster on a plate. When someone orders filet mignon, giant prawns, and homemade angel hair pasta in truffle oil and Parmesan cheese, they expect those ingredients to shine. Instead, I was served a dish so drowned in sauce that it was hard to tell what I was eating. The filet mignon, which should have been the star of the meal, was smothered in a gelatinous mushroom gravy that had the texture of something left in a double boiler for hours. What was supposed to be a mushroom sauce topped with crispy fried onions was instead a diner-style gravy with no fried onions in sight. The prawns, meanwhile, were buried under a port wine reduction that was so cloyingly sweet it could have passed for dessert. The balance of flavors was so off, it was practically a culinary crime scene. A plate of cottage cheese smothered in ketchup and drenched in maple syrup would have offered better balance. Let’s talk about that port wine reduction. Port is already a sweet wine, and reducing it only intensifies that sweetness to an almost unbearable level. To then drench delicate prawns in this syrupy mess is nothing short of culinary vandalism. Pairing this with truffled angel hair pasta only compounded the disaster. The rich, earthy truffle was completely overpowered by the sugary sauce, leaving the dish in complete disarray. As if things couldn’t get worse, the mashed potatoes were served cold. Not lukewarm—cold. This is amateur hour, plain and simple. The cook must have plated the potatoes first and then left them sitting while everything else was prepared. By the time they reached the table, they were as appetizing as leftover takeout. In summary, this was one of the worst $52 meals I’ve ever had the misfortune of encountering. Clearwater needs to seriously reevaluate their kitchen operations, starting with the basics of balance and timing. Until then, I’d recommend steering clear of this culinary shipwreck.

I'm reviewing this restaurant as a dog owner - they're extremely accommodating of dogs for their outdoor seating. Note: you have to walk through the restaurant to get to their outdoor seating. They poured my puppy a bowl of water w/ ice in it, and she was able to sit at the table. :) She also was able to get a piece of halibut for her 6 month (half) birthday meal. The outdoor seating comes with a view of the harbor, and we were able to see jellyfish, a school of small fish, a female sea lion hunting the school, and a loon hunting for fish in the school too. There were a few boats passing by, and there was a guy hunting crabs off the dock too. My puppy had fun watching the action in the harbor as much as we did. I wanted to mention that there's a big difference between outdoor accommodations for people with a reservation vs. without. With a reservation you get a seat out in back where we did - by the harbor, and there's outdoor torches to keep you warm w/ the sea breeze. The people that didn't make a reservation don't get a view of the harbor. It's a tent across the street from the restaurant. Definitely make a reservation. I used Yelp to make the reservation a week ahead of our trip to Newport, and that didn't cause any issues. The food is what I'm taking a star off for - I ordered the scallops with pea risotto, and one of the 3 scallops was still gritty (so hadn't been cleaned properly) & the peas (being a subtle flavor) were completely overwhelmed by the cheese flavor of the risotto. So the peas ended up being just a natural food coloring to the risotto. When you're paying $40 for a dish, you'd expect to be a bit more wow'ed with the flavor & have the scallops be properly cleaned. I also wasn't super impressed with the smores dessert. It's $11 for store bought marshmallows, Hershey's chocolate, and graham crackers & a small butane(?) kettle-thing to cook the marshmallows with. I would've expected for $11 that the ingredients for the smores would be house made - or at least premium store bought. It felt like a cheap gimmick dessert (that you can roast the marshmallows yourself) vs. one worthy of $11. Otherwise, I was impressed with the service and Venus was a very attentive hostess. The harbor was a wonderful backdrop for the meal too. Even if we didn't have our dog with us, I would've been very sad if we didn't eat outdoors by the harbor.

2nd time here, once in 2021 during dinner, and this year for lunch. Came with hubby and again, this restaurant didn't disappoint. They accept reservations, but this time, since they just opened when we came in at 11:30AM, there's no wait. We were seated right away at a table overlooking Yaquina Bay. Excellent view. Music in the background was 80's. Not too loud, just enough volume. Noise level in the restaurant is average. Not too loud, which I like. Restaurant suited for families, children, large groups or couples. Interior is warm and clean. Price is average. Not too expensive nor too cheap. Wait time from ordering to food serving was less than 10mins. We ordered the following: * Seared Jumbo Scallops (on a bed of green pea risotto, blood orange balsamic) $38 - I love the Seared scallops but I'm not a fan of the green pea risotto. I love eating Risotto, but this one somehow my taste buds don't like * Crispy Shrimp with Sriracha Aioli $15 - Hubby liked this. For me, the taste is just ok * Umami Brussel Sprouts (with Miso, Garlic, Tamari, Parmesan) $9 - couldn't taste the Parmesan but the whole dish made sense. We gobbled and finished it fast. Sooo good. * Oyster Shooter $3 - Love this very fresh tasting oyster. With the great tasting house sauce, the taste is just perfect * Peach & black Berry Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream - hubby liked this. Warm cobbler is a good contrast with the cold ice cream There's a good alcoholic drinks selection: Draft beers (7from Oregon and 1 from Washington), 15 bottled beer choices, at least 17 Cocktails, and a lot of choices for wines. Dessert: At least 6 choices Parking: Street parking available and there is a designated Restaurant Parking across the street. Service: Very good 4 thumbs up. We would eat here again when in the area.
