I've been going to Rebecca's since I was a child, and I have enjoyed it every time. However, after learning that Rebecca is a spearhead of the Let's Open Northville movement, I can no longer support this business. As someone who lives in Northville Township (rather than the city proper), there isn't much I can do to ensure the erroneous judicial decision to open up Northville be appealed. However, money talks, and I can speak out by not supporting businesses assisting this effort.
Update to respond to Rebecca:
Dear Rebecca,
It’s very easy to paint me as the enemy—as someone who acted out of malice without doing their research. However, that is simply not the case. I want to be clear that I did not make the decision to post my comment lightly, and it was not made out of spite or with malice.
I’ve been coming to your restaurant since I was a child and have many cherished memories there. My fiancé even took me to Rebecca’s on the day he proposed because he knew how much the restaurant meant to me. I’ve never wished anything but success for your business. My comment was not a result of malice, but rather of sincere disappointment— disappointment that the owner of one of my favorite local spots played a key role in ending one of my favorite parts of Northville (a walkable downtown).
That said, I stand by what I wrote and was not misinformed. I read the court’s opinion in Let’s Open Northville v. City of Northville, reviewed minutes from multiple City Council meetings, and looked through the public comments. I formed my opinion only after taking the time to understand the broader implications of the movement you support. Based on that research, several claims in your response are, in my opinion, misleading or oversimplified.
I won’t go point by point here—partly due to space limitations, but also because this platform isn’t suitable for a full-blown policy debate. However, I do believe that when a business takes a public stance on a community-wide issue, accuracy matters. I encourage anyone reading this to review the court opinion, City Council meeting minutes, and public comments before forming an opinion on this issue.
My original comment reflected my values and was shared respectfully. If you look again, you’ll see that I gave Rebecca's five stars for food, because I genuinely wanted to acknowledge the quality of the food you serve. I only felt compelled to speak out because I believe we all have the right and the responsibility to align our spending with our values. I also hoped to show you that an owner’s public actions can influence a customer’s decision to frequent their business.
I hope that in the future we can find ways to have these conversations without assuming bad intent from those...
Read moreAllow me to share something about a certain breed of customer that I know I've seen all too often. First, those who believe themselves to be the nearest thing to royalty in this town we share. Newsflash: nobody's money is more valuable than anybody else's; get over yourself and your "Hop to it now for me!" attitude. It's beyond annoying. Second, those who come in and disrupt everyone else with their noisy and unruly children...but will also leave their table looking like a bomb exploded over it. Is this what your dining room table looks like at home after you're all finished eating? I wouldn't want to be in the restaurant business for a million dollars these days; every new generation of customer seems to expect more and appreciate less...while ignoring their own inappropriate behaviors. Rebecca's was voted the #1 restaurant for families by Parents' Magazine this year; I've been going there pretty much every week for several years. I don't doubt the restaurant has it's off moments like any other...but it is a bold faced lie for any customer to claim that Rebecca's won't bend over backwards to fix something that a customer has LEGITIMATE reason to complain about. Their food is the best thing we have going in downtown Northville, bar none. I would love to see their Greek, Ranch, and Thousand Islands dressings bottled up and sold...just as I would their spinach pie, coconut cream pie, veggie burgers....lots of menu items too numerous to mention here. I hope this restaurant stays in business for as long as I am here to enjoy it. It's a fabulous place to eat for breakfast, lunch,...
Read moreThis place is absolutely disgusting! Right when you walk in, you are bombarded by flies and a horrible stench. Not only was the place dirty, it was also dark and very unwelcoming. The terrible waitstaff did not do much to lighten the environment. The food was an abomination, you're better off eating out of the toilet. I ordered the crossiant French toast thinking it was an actual crossiant. It turned out to be soggy pancakes covered in whipped cream and cinnamon. When I told my waitress I was unhappy with my course, she sent someone else to deal with it. The other woman said that "according to Rebecca's policy, we do not give refunds, let alone, based on tastebuds" even though I was highly dissatisfied with my meal. She was very cold and ready to attack and I was charged for it. My friend also ordered the fish and chips and said it had an after taste, like it was cooked with ancient and dirty oil. It was no surprise when the waitress asked if we even wanted the dinner roll and coleslaw that came as sides. The roll was stale, and the coleslaw was spoiled and had a bad smell, as if it was sitting in the fridge for over a week. Both the food and the service were the worst I have ever experienced. I would have left sooner, because of the unfriendly atmosphere but decided to give it a shot based on the previous reviews. I highly recommend you to take your money and...
