Not the best, pretty basic, but not the worst Mexican food I've ever had. Service was friendly and food was hot, so there's that. However...
I asked some locals which place they recommend for lunch, and so I ended up at Castillo's. It was right off the main road but parking was really scarce. The first thing I noticed was the music, they were playing pop country...odd but ok... I was greeted promptly in a friendly manner. The salsa was watery yes, but the flavor was good. I ordered chicken fajitas. They came out so hot the pan mitt was melted a bit, which is cool with me cause I don't want luke warm fajitas. It came with beans, rice, and flour tortillas. And that's it, no garnish, nothing. Beans and rice were ok but they were topped with shredded cheddar jack? Very meh if you ask me. The fajita sauce was decent! But the chicken itself had that re-warmed taste, you know the one, so that made it pretty meh as well. Tortilla dried out in record time in their paper covers. That being said- I support my local establishments and I would definitely give this place another shot. A far stretch from "authentic" but it vaguely reminded me of my grandmother's attempts at "Mexican food" and part of me enjoyed that...

Very fresh, the salsa was a bit on the runny side. Kind of like very chunky gazpacho. But tasty!
At one point, husband was full of chips and salsa so he cancelled his order of nachos. So we waited for the burritos. They finally came 45 minutes later with an apology from the waitress -- apparently a large table had already ordered before us.
The burritos were nothing to write home about, and were a bit on the salty side. But as Benjamin Franklin once said, "Hunger is the best spice," so we dug in.
Ambiance-wise, it is full of tchotchkes and color to give it an authentic feel. However their air conditioning was so freezing (it blows up from the floor) that we had to cover the grate with our backpack.
The bill came to $20 for the two burritos and five bowls of chips & salsa. Would I return? Only if we were the first ones to get...
Read moreWe recently stayed a couple days in Mariposa and tied a handful of restaurants around town including Castillo's Mexican Restaurant on 5th Street. Opening hours 11am to 9pm daily.
Had a very good and reasonably priced lunch here. Seating is Mexican themed, service nice and menu the expected range of dishes for casual Mexican dining.
During our lunch we enjoyed an enchilada and taco lunch combo served with refried beans and Mexican rice. Everything tasted as expected and was very good.
We also had the Tostado Compuesta served in a fried shell. Ingredients were fresh and tasty. Served with a side of guacamole, this was also a very good lunch order.
Quick note that the chips and salsa served before our meal were quite good as well.
Overall, we really liked our lunch a Castillo's. This is the sort of place you could get used to eating at regularly if you lived...
