Fugu Ice Cream & Taiyaki — Restaurant in Oceanside

I just came here to celebrate my sisters birthday. She’s been here before and loved it so I was all in, especially being an ice cream connoisseur.

We all got rolled ice cream and having been to other rolled ice cream places I know it can take a second to orient myself with the menu. However in the interaction it was VERY confusing.

I wanted to order a chocolate rolled ice cream with strawberry sauce and fruity pebbles. However they said I couldn’t get that and I needed to order the Kit-kat rolled ice cream sundae and substitute for the toppings I wanted. I didn’t want the kit-kat base on that ice cream I wanted chocolate and they said i could substitute the base for I was VERY confused. I asked how many toppings does just the ice cream come with and if not how much are the toppings. The cashier said they didn’t know and couldn’t tell me. It was weird! I just said forget it I want a chocolate ice cream base with strawberry sauce and fruity pebbles. The other co-worker walked up to the register and helped the cashier. The topping were at no charge. The coworker made my ice cream.

TLDR: don't go close to closing. Taiyaki waffle cone is good.

Menu: the screen menu is up to date--the menu posted on the wall isn't up to date (or the items are not in season). One menu lists the Roll Ice Cream, the other lists the Taiyaki ice cream and your customization options.

I suggest you go earlier rather than towards the end of the day because they will run out of flavors--especially the coveted Matcha. I was disappointed when I got to the counter, ready for matcha madness, only to be told that it was sold out cries.

Limited indoor seating. If you order the roll ice cream, you can watch it be prepared through the glass. Totally mesmerizing to watch--slap on a bib because you may drool!

Service: order and pay at the register, pick up your order to the left at the end of the counter, add toppings of your choice from the topping bar to the left of the register.

Taiyaki: The taiyaki waffle is pretty thick and hefty. Holds the ice cream well and has a satisfying soggy chew. This by itself is pretty filling especially if you're getting this after a meal.

Taro Ice Cream: a bit on the sweet side but you can taste the taro. It doesn't taste extremely artificial like at some other places.

Black Sesame Ice Cream: lighter taste and not as sweet but you can still totally taste...

Fugu Taiyaki Icecream is one of the best in downtown Oceanside! They offer a fantastic selection of tasty flavors ranging from taro, to chocolate, and even Fruity Pebbles! There’s something here that'll make everyone happy! You can order your Taiyaki cake to be filled with icecream or even Nutella and they also have Vegan options!!

Located on Mission Ave, right across the street from Regal Theaters, they have one of the best locations to relax and people-watch. They are also located 3 blocks from the beach!. So you can grab your icecream treat and literally walk to the beach or head to the movies!!

I highly recommend trying out any of the variety of flavors and pairing it with a Taiyaki stuffed cake, but they also have cups and cones if you desire. Your order is made Fresh! Right in front of you!!

Fugu has also contributed to the community by adding a wraparound street art mural that can be seen as you walk by and it even goes INTO their establishment!! So cool!!!
