When I was a kid, my aunt used to take me to the Snappy Service cafe. I can remember their burgers with great fondness. When I heard that the building had finally been turned back into a restaurant, my excitement was short lived when I found out it was going to be a Mexican restaurant. Don't get me wrong, I love Mexican food. But it felt like a betrayal of all those memories of my aunt Diane. For a long time I couldn't bring myself to come herr. This morning though, I finally broke down and came in through the glass brick wall. The atmosphere is very fresh and light. For a small place, it feels very open and homey. At the suggestion of my server, I had a breakfast burrito and a coffee. The coffee was good. Nothing special, but still fresh brewed and not stale at all. But the burrito.... Wow! Potatoes, onion, queso, and a well balanced seasoning wrapped around a fresh soft perfectly cooked tortilla! It was amazing! The first few bites didn't give way to heat. When it finally did, it wasn't overwhelming at all. It was part of the overall flavour profile, and blended perfectly. Fresh is a good word fir all of their food. It feels like someone's abuela just finished making breakfast for the family. Everything tastes just made and from scratch. The staff were friendly and polite. It was more like talking to a friend than waitstaff. Very informal and friendly, with no feeling of artificial sincerity. Every person working here seemed to have a genuine love for their job. I rarely give an all positive review, as I can always find something I would change. In this case: nothing. There is a unisex bathroom. I am all for this, but I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea. I don't think this is a political statement as much as a space issue (the place is built on a postage stamp, but an adorable one!) But it was very clean! So yes I recommend the place! I will...
Read moreWe decided to try this place based on the reviews. Good Mexican food is VERY difficult to find in Utah. Back home in Texas, you have “Tex-mex. And you have the. Authentic stuff. The authentic varieties are great as well as the Tex-mex. I love the authentic version too. And it is usually found at the smaller mom-and-pop places like this. I’m a huge menudo fan. The soup. Not the band. I ordered the menudo (it was a Sunday). My wife had a plate with one egg, refried beans, and potatoes. We both had a class of water. When we were rung up at the counter, it was $44!! What tha???? I didn’t say anything. I figured the menudo was a little more expensive because it takes so long to cook. And was expecting it to come in a huge bowl. Bonus! I’ll take leftovers home for later that night. Two meals for the price of one! Along comes my order. The bowl was small and square. Fairly deep though. Tripe, hominy and broth. Along with the onion, cilantro and lime. My wife’s plate came and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The potatoes were little cubes that were obviously once frozen, then deep fried. Ben’s seemed to be homemade. The flour tortillas were huge and homemade. Until the first bite of the menudo. …good flavor. But the afterburner was pretty extreme. Now keep in mind, I love spicy. However, as I continued to eat the menudo, the heat overpowered the flavor. So much to the point that it was not enjoyable and I could not eat it. I had mostly the tripe. But my nose was running so bad I had to go tongue bathrooms to blow my nose. But hey… the bathroom was immaculate. Very clean! As a rule of thumb, This is a good representation of how clean a restaurant will keep the kitchen. I doubt I’ll be back here again. Way overpriced for...
Read moreI may have been out of the loop for awhile, but I was disappointed. After they have been closed for a year, I was looking forward to going back to Rosa's.
Used to be for $14 you got a big, meaty burrito, smothered, with rice and beans - and a huge plate of it. It wasn't elegant, but it was filling.
Now that they have reopened, the same plate is $17.50! Yikes!! I got it "to go" and the rice and beans were quite small, actually. Where I come from, $17.50 a plate is fancy eating and this is not fancy eating! And that's a 25% hike one year!!!
With a coupon, you can still go to Burger King and get a Whopper, fries, drink and if you order at the kiosk, all for $5! Even Sonoran Grill is cheaper for their plates, and their decor and food are a lot better!
I saw people pulling out wads of $20 bills at Rosa's like they were high rolling in this little dive joint. I guess I must be...
