Elliot's Wood Fired Kitchen & Tap
Decor is Modern, everything seemed fresh and new, with a long wood butcher block bar, booths, high bar tables and two regular tables in back. They kept the original tin ceiling, and there are brick walls with photographs in frames. Wood butcher block tables and plain wood chairs. The chairs are a bit uncomfortable for me. There are plenty of TVs to watch the game on. The large tile oven in back is eye catching. The menus are just printed on card stock. Salads are served in real bowls, appetizers and subs are served on rectangular aluminum trays fitted with a thin sheet of paper. The paper tears as soon as you try to cut anything. All the pizzas are 12" bar size and served on an aluminum pizza pan, no spatula.
The service was good, the staff was friendly and pleasant enough, although I did feel slightly rushed toward the end of the meal, we were not offered coffee or dessert.
Prices are on par with other casual dining restaurants, somewhat on the high side compared to other pizza parlors.
The Food seemed a bit lackluster to me for all the hype, and long wait times lately. The deep fried ravioli and marinara sauce is excellent, the chicken wings were OK. The Elliot salad was plain lettuce with a dusting of mozzarella cheese, meh, anyone can make a better salad than that. The Edgy Greek salad was much better. Then came the pizza, I was completely underwhelmed, honestly it looked and tasted just like Red Baron frozen pizza, only burned. Very disappointing to say the least. There was no garlic to shake on the pizza. On to the subs, they were small, the meatballs were absolutely delicious. The bread was plain and tasteless, there was just a tiny little bit of sauce, and very little cheese. I would have rather ate the meatballs plain on a dish with some sauce on them. The chicken sub was good, although my aunt thought that it was beef, not chicken, it was a little dry. The steak fries were excellent. The Street Tacos were tasty, and pricey, but small. I was disappointed not to see any pasta dishes on the menu. This is lunch and snack faire.
Overall my impression was that this is a bar, plenty of beers on tap, and the food is sized as bar portions, and bar prices. I would go back to watch a game with a buddy or two, have a few beers, and a snack. This is not where you want to go for dinner with...
Read moreWith their great track record with Red Oak Pub in North Newark, we had high hopes for Elliot's when we heard they were opening in the building previously occupied by Sparta Restaurant and Coffee shop. We weren't disappointed! Though it made us a bit nostalgic about our old hangout Sparta, we were happy to see they kept the warm, historic vibe. We split the Spicy Italian wood fired pizza ($8.99), Edgy Greek salad ($6.59), and a piece of the tiramisu cake ($6.59). Their beer selection is great, ever-changing and soon to be featured on a chalkboard so they can keep the latest updates. I tried the Thirsty Dog Sea Dog Wild Blueberry beer and my husband had the Columbus Bohdi IPA, followed by a couple of Yuengling. They were pretty busy when we got there, so we sat at the bar. The bar seats are comfortable, generous with curved cushioned backs. We were surprised by how quickly we got our food. The service was great and bartender Jessica really made us feel welcome. The pizza was excellent. The wood fired crust was crispy from first bite to last. The cheese was properly gooey and delicious. The sausage was great on it, too, very flavorful. The edgy Greek salad is served in a generous bowl, so we split that. They were nice enough to split the salad into two smaller bowls for us. Their house vinaigrette is garlicky and wonderful. The tiramisu cake, though not made by them, was great with lots of layers of creamy goodness. The draft beer prices -- Yuengling was $2.25, the IPA was $6.00 and my blueberry wheat beer was $4.25. Including our tip, we got out of there for just under $50 with tip. We'll stick with domestic beer next time. All in all, we had a great experience and we will...
Read moreEdit: 8-6-22 The wait to get in, particularly on a weekend evening is still lengthy. The food is still phenomenal. My wife and I both had the fish tonight and I think it's the best in the area by far. The service was also spot on especially considering they were at capacity. The one thing that I dropped a star off for on this updated review though is the seating arrangement. It hasn't changed since they opened and that's a problem because they have these high top tables that are paired with bar height or taller stools that are down right uncomfortable. I'd be willing to bet that if they took a poll of their customers they'd find that few if any of them find them pleasant at all. By the time you're finished eating, your legs are numb. Really need to add in some type of foot rest to the tables or consider changing up the arrangement altogether. I'm sure it's not something that has been complained about loudly in the past so I'm not sure if it will make the radar now but it is significant enough for us to consider other options when we choose where we want to repeat our business.
The worst part about this place is trying to get into it without a wait. Once you do get in you realize why there was a wait. The atmosphere is hip and comfy. The food is phenomenal. Can't go wrong with any of their quick fire pizzas. If you haven't been here yet, make plans to...
