My husband and I frequently go to Sonny's BBQ, but this day we decided to try a different restaurant and go to Colt's Pig Stand for lunch. This was our first time visiting Colt's Pig Stand; it was a Saturday lunchtime. The first thing we noticed was that the place was not busy at all for a weekend lunchtime. When we left the restaurant, we realized why not many people were eating there. My husband ordered the burger with mac and cheese and asked how much extra it would be if he wanted a side salad with his meal. The server said she thought it was a $1.99 upcharge. My husband asked her to make sure the upcharge was accurate. She replied that she was sure it was only $1.99 extra for the side salad with his meal, so my husband ordered the side salad. I ordered sliders with the collard greens. The server returned to our table 5 minutes later to tell me that they didn't have any slider buns and asked if I wanted something else. I was like, "Bummer... what restaurant runs out of slider buns?" So I ordered a fried chicken sandwich instead. One thing we noticed is that their beverage cups are really small compared to Sonny's BBQ's massive beverage cups. At Colt's Pig Stand, the plastic cups hold probably only 6 ounces of fluid with the ice. The server must have refilled our beverages at least 4 times each. The flavors of the food items we ordered were very disappointing. My husband said his burger had no flavor, and when I tried it, I had to agree with that assessment. The pickle chips on the burger tasted like turmeric, not like the regular pickle chips in the glass jar you buy in the store. My fried chicken sandwich looked and tasted similar to the regular chicken sandwich you can buy at Wendy's, except Wendy's sandwich costs half the price. Popeyes, a fast-food joint, makes a better chicken sandwich than Colt's Pig Stand. Both my husband and I were unimpressed with the burger and chicken sandwich we had at Colt's Pig Stand. The mac and cheese and collard greens also lacked flavor. On a positive note, my husband did enjoy his side salad but said that was the only thing that was good about the lunch here. My husband only ate about a third of the burger and mac and cheese and asked for a takeout container. When we got the bill, we noticed that the server charged us $5.34 for the side salad instead of the $1.99 she told us the side salad was with a meal. The server lied to us! We took the difference in price out of her tip because we asked her to make sure that the $1.99 price was accurate, and instead of asking a manager or verifying, she said she was sure it was only $1.99. When things like this happen, we refuse to pay for someone's laziness and failure to give correct information. Overall, the service at this place was good, minus the lie the server told us about the side salad upcharge. The sandwiches were nothing special. Sonny's BBQ has better sandwiches and sides. We won't be coming back to Colt's Pig Stand. Based on our first and only experience, I do not recommend...

With all the hype of Colt’s opening a location in Orange City, I couldn’t help but want to try this place out. In all honesty, it was just okay and considering the fact that they are more expensive than both Mission BBQ and 4Rivers, this causes me some concern. It’s hands down better than Sonny’s, which has sort of morphed into the VFW version of a BBQ restaurant. Perhaps I’m being too harsh, but I’m serious about my BBQ and know what a labor of love goes into the smoking process. I’ll try to break this down based on what I had and hopefully this will encourage people either way regarding what they order. I had the two meat platter, which comes with two sides and no drink.

Smoked Sausage - 3 of 5 stars: It was good but honestly just okay. The #41 sausage at Mission BBQ is much better.

Sliced Brisket - 2 of 5 stars: I was not asked by the girl taking my order if I wanted part of the flat or tip. This is crucial because it depends on what cut or meat you get. The flat tends to be drier and not as fatty whereas the tip is just the opposite. I received part of the tip, which was both fatty AND dry, making it a bit of an anomaly. There wasn’t much bark to speak of, which is where most of the spices reside for the meat.

Fried Okra - 2 of 5 stars: There is a .99 cent up charge for okra, although why is not clear at all. Unfortunately, it was soggy and undercooked. Kinda disappointing, especially when I was charged extra.

BBQ Beans - 4 of 5 stars: The BBQ beans are excellent. I would have given them 5 stars if they had some sort of bacon in them. 4Rivers has pretty much cornered the market on this one.

Cornbread: 4 of 5 stars: Again, this was excellent. The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars is because it was undercooked, which is kind of a big deal considering the fact that it’s made with eggs. I was almost finished with my meal when this finally came out because they had run out in the kitchen.

Texas Toast - 1 of 5: First of all, if you have the guts to refer to anything as being “Texas”, it should be BIG. Instead, I was served two slices of toasted Wonder Bread and was only given that because the corn bread was not ready.

Colt’s serves 4 sauces: original, hot, sweet, and Carolina. The only one I really liked was the sweet as the original was really kinda average and the hot tasted just like the original with some cayenne pepper added. The Carolina was bland and lacked a lot of flavor.

I recognize that this location has been open only for a couple of days. However, it was 45 minutes from the time I walked in the door to the time that I received my food. This was on a Saturday, just post lunch-rush, and the place honestly was not very busy. On my way out, I witnessed a spat between a manager and an employee, which didn’t set well with me. They need some work but I will be back as my wife will undoubtedly want...

I came out here one day, because I really wanted barbecue, but I also really wanted to try somewhere new. So I looked at my incredibly long list of places to try, and Colt's Pig Stand just stood out to me, so there I went. It was a long drive, so I was hoping it was worth it. We roll up and the first thing you notice is the giant corn silo that dominates the façade. Very quaint. A good start.

The quaintness continues inside. Rural and rustic touches everywhere, from the wooden signs with funny little quips to the piles of firewood laden throughout the dining room to the wallpaper adorning the edges of the ceiling with old school drawings of country ingredients. It worked, and it made you feel right at home. If you're from the South, like I am.

So we started browsing the menu, and it was all pretty basic stuff. We wanted to try a little of everything, so we ordered two orders of the 3 Meat Combo Plate. Let me list it out real quick. We ordered the brisket, the baby back ribs, the chicken wings, the turkey, the sausage, and the pilled pork. Along with sides of the mac, the onion rings, the tots, and the Brunswick stew.

Overall, everything was delightful. There wasn't a bad component to the meal. I was very impressed with the Brunswick stew. You don't see a lot of it in Florida, but this was nice, had a subtle heat, loaded with meat and veg, just a really delicious side.

And I was also impressed with the turkey. Smoked turkey is usually sooo try, but not here, they did it right! It was moist and juicy and really to be slathered in not-too-much sauce.

Last thing I'll point out is the unique onion rings. The batter they were battered in was different than normal. It was lighter, airier, almost like a tempura batter. It made them seem fluffier, less heavy. I really enjoyed it.

I won't go into detail on everything we ate. Just know that it was good, this place gave me exactly what I was hoping for, and if I'm ever in Orange City and wanting barbecue, I will definitely...
