First and last time going to a Bonchon. We love Korean food and were excited to see a new Korean restaurant opening up near us. I got a chicken katsu, my spouse got a pork belly fried rice, and we got a 6-piece of their boneless wings to try. The total came out to over $50... which is pretty crazy, but we were hoping it would be worth it.
It was not worth it. The katsu was tough and difficult to chew, basically burned and dry. It's probably the worst katsu I've gotten from anywhere (and I literally try the katsu anywhere it's available). It was $14 and came with the dryest and blandest white rice, no substitutions. I got fries as a side and those were actually good. The fried rice had ONLY 3 of the smallest pieces of pork belly in it at an additional charge. So that sucks. And then the fried rice was... fine. It was very plain and didn't have much flavor. For fried rice?! Crazy. My spouse got corn as a side and said it was good.
But then, our 6 pieces of chicken. We opened up the box and were basically scandalized by the insanely small bits of chicken in it. They were smaller than chicken nuggets from Wendy's. The flavor was good, but it was too small and just not worth it. I've included a picture for reference. (I tried but google won't let me post the pic? Anyways, they are very small, like 1.5x1.5inches.)
Also, there are 4 small tables in the whole restaurant and limited canned/bottle...
Read moreI had high hopes for Bonchon, especially as a big fan of Korean food, but unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The service was good and helpful, but the food just didn't live up to expectations.
The Bulgogi fried rice was incredibly underwhelming. It completely lacked flavor, which was surprising given the typically rich ingredients. On top of that, the portion had barely any bulgogi beef—I counted maybe three small pieces. At $14, I expected a lot more in terms of both taste and portion size.
We also tried the chicken katsu, which looked promising at first glance. However, our chicken was burnt, making it dry along with the burnt taste. It left me feeling like we wasted our money. Considering other reviews mentioning the same or similar issue, you'd think they would have figured out how to avoid burning the chicken.
Overall, the prices were high, and the portion sizes were not worth it. I had been eagerly waiting for Bonchon to open, but sadly, it was not worth the anticipation. I hope they can improve their food quality because I genuinely wanted to enjoy the experience. For now, though, I can't...
Read moreKorean not approved. The mixed chicken pieces with bones were way too big and thick and didn't have enough sauce for the amount of chicken. You taste the sauce when you eat the skin part, but you don't taste anything but tough chicken. Authentic Korean BBQ places have enough sauce in the box so that you can still dip the chicken in. For the bone in chicken they need to use smaller size chickens to make sure people don't eat just chicken without sauce or provide more sauce on the side. Bigger chicken doesn't mean better. The chicken and sauce ratio needs to be right. My wife purchased the boneless strips, paid $8.99 for a 6 pc and ended up being served 6 small nuggets (McDonald's nuggets are bigger) that weren't even fully coated in sauce. Very disappointed. Don't waste your money, there are other Korean chicken places (chicken in the kitchen, Sushi 38, and BB.q chicken) that do a better job at replicating Korean fried chicken.
