An updated and modern Mexican spot with beautiful artwork and very good food! Good for drinks and a small to medium meal.
The music was a little too loud for lunchtime (we were almost shouting) and menu options aren’t what you’d expect from a typical Mexican restaurant. They don’t offer side dishes such as rice or beans, the seafood was $20+ per dish and almost every single option had shrimp in it (there is no fish here), the tacos only have three options (adobada/pork, pollo/chicken, carne asada/beef) and there was one taco option that had birria but it has habañero included. They also didn’t have lemonade :(
We tried their asada fries (pictured) which were VERY yummy. Their mussels were out for blood - SO spicy! The Quesabirria was also very good, it’s about the size of a medium tortilla folded in half.
The menu uses a QR code that allows you to order from there and offers small pictures of some of the options which are, admittedly, hard to see. Our waitress was kind enough to explain many of the options to us but that could have been avoided if the menu were updated just a little bit better. All options are also pretty much exclusively in Spanish ONLY.
If you’re looking for a true Mexican meal (fajitas, chimichanga, enchiladas, etc.) fix get it someplace else. Overall, good food but had too much of a clubby atmosphere for what we were expecting which is likely the...
Read moreI was not impressed with the service unfortunately. I had showed up, sat down at a table. Realized I had to order by phone, so I did. I waited 38mins before I got my drink, and I had to wait a bit longer for food. After waiting 45mins I got my fries, every table that came after me had been served before I did. I still did receive my free tacos, and was waiting for my drink to be remade because I had wanted it blended. After waiting 1hr at the table I only ever got my fries and choose to leave. I was disappointed because I came to the restaurant alone, the stools around the bar were not open for people to sit at. I was completely forgotten about and somewhat ignored. I watched other tables being served around me. I can say the atmosphere was awesome, loved the art and the feel of the place. The fries are the best I've had anywhere! There was just a strong disconnect between service, ordering, communication and direction. I hope someday to come back and have a...
Read moreSadly I couldn't make it to the Cinco de mayo grand opening, but I finally got a chance to go in for lunch yesterday. I had the Burrito Mar y Tierra, a savory twist on surf and turf with shrimp and beef, and The Toxic Boy, a delicious drink reminiscent of a tropical/chili mexican candy; and far to easy to drink down. The overall interior aesthetic is a refreshing splash of Mexican modern art in an otherwise drab and outdated city. It almost feels like you're transported to a local favorite in L.A. when you walk through the doors. The owners are an absolute delight and the staff were all welcoming, helpful and in good spirits ( hard to find in food service these days). La Cantina will undoubtedly be a new weekly tradition for me! Thank you for opening in...
