If you know my reviews, you know that I almost never give a place 5 stars. Goshi deserves every star! I only wish I remembered the name of our waitress so her bosses can know that she's a part of those 5 stars. I'll start with the entrance, where you get an authentic Japanese feel starting with the giant Maneki Neko statue behind the host stand. I'll continue with the fact that it was a packed restaurant, but the host still managed to find us a table almost right away despite not having a reservation. Then, the service. The waitress had a kind smile and was so happy to answer questions and accommodate our needs. She checked on us frequently, but was never intrusive. Then, of course, the food! Oh my goodness the food! I cook Japanese food at home, and have eaten at many Japanese restaurants. The teriyaki don bowl was perhaps the best teriyaki I have ever had. They were willing to accommodate that I needed mine without the vegetables. My dining companion had the same thing, but with the vegetables. We both enjoyed it so much! The rice was perfect, the sauce delicious, and everything cooked to perfection! They accommodated me not having green onions in my miso soup, and it was excellent soup. Right amount of wakame seaweed and tofu, great miso and dashi flavor. Even the pickled ginger we requested was so much brighter tasting and wonderful than the same at other restaurants! Their wine and sake selections are also excellent, and I especially recommend the sake nigori (I'm blanking on the name of it, but it's in the photos I uploaded. Something like "perfect snow" is in the name.)
If I were to have any complaints, there are two minor things. My dining companion ordered a Coke, and they brought out a glass of ice and a can of Coca Cola. He figured that meant no free refills, which is a little disappointing. The only other thing is that you have to call for a reservation, which wasn't clear from their website and is why we didn't have a reservation. We usually...
Read moreMy wife and I have been coming to Goshi's for 3 years since moving from SoCal. The food was always good and the conversation at the sushi bar with Yugo, the head chef was lively and friendly and filled with new recommendations and menu suggestions. We would be met at the counter by an older Japanese gentleman (sorry I cannot remember his name) by a smile and a nod to the sushi bar and who would take our drink order as we sat down. However the last 6 months has seen many changes at Goshi's in Paso Robles. First the head sushi chef, Yugo was injured in a car accident and was replaced while he recuperated by another chef who though competent is not real friendly. There is now no conversation or menu suggestions forthcoming from the staff behind the bar as there was with Yugo (who is back but spends time in the kitchen as well as time behind the bar four days a week). The quality of the food presentation has all but disappeared.
Secondly the the older gentleman who would greet us has, as we were told by a waitress just last night, is no longer there having been fired for being "being great with the customers but mean to us". His departure is evident in the lack of service attention by the waitress(s). We were not met at the desk at which we stood until finally notice by a napkin folding waitress. We sat for over five minutes before any of the three waitresses asked us if we would like drinks. Later I would have find a waitress (3) who were spending their time hashing out the weekly schedule in the back or gossiping while folding napkins off to the side for a refill on our drinks.
Until the last few months Goshi's earned a 5 star but needless to say it may be time to try somewhere else which is so sad because Goshi's has been the go to place for very good sushi with a very friendly atmosphere in North SLO county but for now,...
Read moreQuick Summary A hidden gem in Paso Robles and along with its SLO location, probably the best Japanese food in the Central Coast. Fresh ingredients, great selection, and great value, make this a top spot in the Central Coast.
Food- 5 stars We came here for lunch on the first week when indoor dining returned. Ordered the sashimi lunch and the fried chicken and were absolutely delighted
Sashimi lunch- 10 pieces of fish, with every piece as fresh as ever and served in room temperature. They even pair each fish with a specific sauce or condiment that amplifies the flavor profile
Fried chicken- it's not the best karaage (Japanese fried chicken), but it's very good. Juicy chicken thigh with salmon roe in the sauce to add to the experience. Definitely recommend for an appetizer
Service- 5 stars Service was fantastic. Food came out very quickly, almost a bit too quickly. Staff was attentive throughout our visit
Selection- 5 stars They have everything a sushi restaurant typically offers (e.g. sushi, rolls, sashimi, tempura). But what really drew me here was that they had Asahi Super Dry! Unfortunately, it wasn't available on draft yet, but settled with Kirin on draft, which I can only find in Japanese restaurants in metropolitan cities
Value- 5 stars Large portions, quality food, and the final bill was about $70 for a lot of fresh, delicious sashimi and an appetizer. Extremely competitive wherever you live
Bottom Line Goshi will always be a must-stay whenever we head to Paso and the Central Coast. Solid Japanese food at an...
