Isgro Pastries — Restaurant in Philadelphia

When was the last time you went to a real bakery? And not a coffee shop that also happens to sell muffins and danishes along with 15 different types of coffee? For most of us I think it has been a while, simply because there aren't that many of them left. With the advent of coffee shops who do in house baking and the supermarket bakeries, community bakeries have all but disappeared. But Isgro Pasticceria at 1009 Christian Street in South Philadelphia has been serving the community for over 100 years.

I paid the bakery a visit early on a Saturday morning, and the small storefront was already packed with people. The small aisle facing the cases of confections is thinner than one at a supermarket, so 10 people made it feel a little claustrophobic. None of us cared too much though, as we perused the wide array of cookies, cakes, custards, rolls, tarts and turnovers, and of course the cannoli. Half the customers, including myself, had come in for cannoli, the house specialty.

Indeed, the cannoli are excellent, but the bakery has many more cakes and cookies that you can really only find at a real bakery. Peaches and Cream is a small spongecake that is soaked in peach schnapps and filled with peach custard and the best part: it looks like a small peach, covered in orange and pink sugar

Once you visit once, you'll be dying to return to Isgro over and over again so that you can try everything. So I encourage you to make a trip to South Philly to get a cannoli, or almost any other dessert you can imagine, because Isgro probably has it--along with a few more desserts you haven't even thought...

Order# 21282110 Order date: 12-19-23 Delivery date:12-29-23 I called multiple times, your team refused to ship other than through Goldbelly. As an owner I hope you can see the big picture here, Goldbelly is killing your business. In the past i could order from you directly and you would ship overnight, I would have product within 24-48 hours. I wanted these for Christmas when they showed up on the 29th. Lose Gold belly and start shipping your own product or continue to see people getting product days after its needed for a party or event. I live in Florida, so even when I begged your team to help ship these directly to me overnight they refused. I explained I needed them by the 24th. The calander on the site said i would get them on the 24th. I get being busy, I get things might have been a little crazy during the holidays, people might have been out sick and all that. But in the end your customers deserve overnight delivery if they ask for and are willing to pay for it. Goldbelly shipped my product "next day overnight" on the 28th, when it was ordered 9 days earlier. This isn't acceptable and the saddest part was I left for Denver Colorado on the 27th of December, when we got back on Jan 10th we had rocks instead of your delicious Ricotta cookies. Love your product, not a fan of your partnership with Goldbelly. Give it some thought, what's the point of anyone ordering from you out of state if they never know when product will be delivered for...

Treats aside, the personnel facilitate a positive environment and go above and beyond to assist you with all your needs. The manager, Amanda, perfectly embodies the meaning of “customer service with a smile” and I cannot wait to become a lifelong patron! I recently ordered my best friend’s graduation cookies from here, and she absolutely loved them! Everything from the taste to the design blew her out of the water, and I couldn’t feel more grateful to the sales associates, managers, and pastry chefs who made this dream a reality. I will forever hail Isgro Pastries as the best bakery in all of Philly and will certainly partner with them in the future to celebrate all of life’s momentous occasions.
