Sor Ynez — Restaurant in Philadelphia

Our trip to Sor Ynez was incredible. It was our first time there & we found out about them through word of mouth. The food far surpassed other “well-known” Mexican joints in the neighborhood, in both taste, presentation, and value. You can tell they put a lot of love into making every single dish. We got the guac (and enough chips!), brussel sprouts (wow), birria, enchiladas, and the enmoladas. Everything was absolutely delicious & perfectly portioned. The food was perfectly spicy, not spicy hot, but where you can taste spice subtly in the back of your mouth. I like that they are several dishes they can make vegan. The margs were balanced, the white sangria was crisp, not at all sugary. Our server was really, really good, it was clear he is experienced & was timely without it seeming rushed. The host (maybe the owner) was incredibly kind & checked in with us too. I left a note on my Resy that it was my partner’s birthday, not knowing they’d read it or if they’d do anything with it (didn’t expect it of course). Well, they brought out a small flan with a candle for his birthday. It was a complete surprise & it was delicious, not at all too sugary. This is such a hidden gem, we cannot wait...

The food is indisputably good, I'd like to get that out of the way before anything else.

HOWEVER:

The first time I came here I had the birria and loved it, the portion was only two tacos but I figured that must just be their brunch portion so I let it go.

Even though I thought it was pretty overpriced I still decided to come back for dinner thinking things might be bigger, I was shocked to find out that the dinner portion is still just two tacos!!!!!

LITERALLY EVERYWHERE ELSE gives a minimum of three tacos to an order. Giving two tacos at a whopping $12/per piece is actually literally insane. This is NOT fine dining, this is a warehouse in North Philly. Get real guys!

If there were three tacos in an order it would still be pretty overpriced at $8/piece, but guess what? I would come here every single week if the portion better matched the price.

I am hoping that the ownership is receptive to their customers feedback, I want to like this place and come back regularly, but until the prices or portions are adjusted I cannot justify coming here with so many other excellent options around the city.

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, please do...

Wow! This place is so good I'm kicking myself for not trying it earlier. It's tucked away in an industrial style complex sandwiched between nexfab/restore etc very easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

We went yesterday for early dinner, we didn't have reservations so we sat at the bar, highly rec booking in advance if you have a large group. They're also requiring vax cards and IDs

Drinks were excellent, fresh ingredients and well made -- rivaling any top cocktail place in the city. I especially liked the sipping tequilas (Tres Generaciones anejo was delicious!). We got guacamole as a starter - definitely not to be missed, crunchy crispy chips, guac had just a little bit of heat. Then we both got platters for our meals which was probably slightly too much food (enchilada and pork carnitas platter). Everything was well seasoned, cooked to perfection the meat was juicy and tender and overall everything was delicious. Great ambiance, attentive staff and a nice vibe. Perfect for special occasions or date night etc I'll definitely be coming back to try more...
