I live around the corner from this shop so I've been plenty of times for a quick cup of coffee. I have to split up the ratings into a few parts to be fair.
Coffee: 4.5- Good coffee, good price and certainly worth both sitting for a cup or grabbing something quick running to catch the bus. Food: 2.5- EXTREMELY overpriced for most of the sandwiches, which are basically just sliced bread with some (albeit tasty) ingredients in the middle. A bagel and cream cheese is a fine price, and fine, but overall don't come here for food if you are actually hungry. Overall ambiance: 4.5- The big windows on both corners make it a great place to watch people, and keep the cafe very bright. There are plenty of tables for working, or for chatting. It's not crystal clean like some of the newer shops, but I find the little grit exactly what I want in a coffee shop. There's also a large amount of space in the basement (though no windows so very dark down there). I've been coming here once a week for a few months now. Indifferent service aside I was pretty happy with the food/coffee.
Being a graduate student, I need a good place to sit and do work. I always make sure I have a something to eat/drink in front of me and order multiple times.
Today, I go in and the guy complains his help didn't show up and that he can't make any food. So, I asked him can you simply put bacon in the convention oven as a side and I'll buy a premade sandwich.
He decided in his infinite wisdom to reprimand me by saying "the entire point of not making ready to made orders is not cook."
I'm in the service industry and I think given the situation he could have made an adjustment or changed his tone. I had ordered a latte and infact I was so upset I gave it away and left. I won't return.
Sorry Nam, I'm tired of having to leave and go elsewhere and because your baristas have poor attitudes and refuse to at least work with customers.
Great quirky place to eat...

When I went in this door it gave me a chance to cool down, grab a coffee and begin to enjoy being in the city. It was the gateway to small restaurants, bookshops and more that was the Philadelphia I was looking for. I'm so glad I made the effort and, more to the point, I'm glad that they did too. It's just a neighbourhood joint - but that's exactly what a...
